Year number 5 of coaching color guard has officially begun 🥰. I am SO EXCITED to be working with the largest colorguard team Roseville High has ever seen (as far as we know!)

I have a really good feeling about this season, mostly because we have some great instructional staff, AND I’m lucky enough to have returners who are incredible role models to our new members.

I’m so grateful to have support from all directions as we create our next halftime show!

A Thanksgiving Reflection
(originally sent to my newsletter subscribers)

As we gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, I’m thinking about the deeper layers of this holiday—not just the gratitude it inspires, but also the history behind it.

In this email, I’m sharing a bit about the history of Thanksgiving with the intention of honoring the complexity of this holiday.

I want to celebrate the good while also acknowledging the darker side (don’t worry, it ends on a hopeful note!).

The Thanksgiving story we often hear—about the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people coming together to share a meal—was an act of both collaboration AND survival.

The Wampanoag People generously taught the Pilgrims essential skills for farming, fishing, and living in harmony with the land. Without this act of kindness, the settlers likely would not have survived their first harsh winter.

Yet, as we honor these moments of cooperation, we also recognize the difficult truths of what followed—centuries of displacement, loss, and injustice for the Wampanoag and other Indigenous peoples.

So when I’m thinking about Thanksgiving, I’m not just picturing two groups of people from different continents/worlds sitting at a table and breaking bread.

I’m imagining a peaceful and cooperative moment, with the awareness that the moment is taking place in the midst of times of fear, pain, confusion, injustice, and violence.

The kindness and lessons Indigenous people offered to the Pilgrims were made in an attempt to preserve their lives and protect the people they loved.

If you know what happened next, your heart is probably aching right now.

Because sometimes we can do everything we can to protect the people we love… and something like illness or corruption overpower our efforts.

That’s why it’s so important to treasure every moment we have with them.

Because life is a fragile thing.

Fragile, and precious.

That’s what I think this holiday is all about: taking a moment to sit with how precious it is, and celebrate all that is good, even if the broader context of the state of the world is chaotic, difficult, and scary.

If you’re looking for a way to reflect and hold space for both gratitude and awareness this holiday, here’s a few questions that can get you started.

1. Who has helped me thrive in challenging times, and how can I express my appreciation to them?
2. What lessons can I learn from the resilience and generosity of Indigenous communities?
3. How can I bring a spirit of kindness and collaboration into today, or the coming year?

If you’ve made it this far, I want to thank you for seeking to celebrate in a way that honors the complexity of the past and holds hope for a brighter future.

May your Thanksgiving be filled with meaningful connections, heartfelt gratitude, and an abundance of delicious food.

If this resonated or helped you in any way, please share it or send it to someone else who you think would enjoy it!

With warmth and reflection,

Your Coach

I had to print this and tape it above my desk. Thanks for sharing this a while back.

Sometimes I feel a little discouraged that the world we live in needs so much healing and reparation.

I’m constantly reminding myself that whatever amount of good I can do is a part of the solution and it is worth doing.

Whatever good you can do, regardless of what kind of good (whether it be an act of kindness, making art that challenges people to think, having hard conversations, etc.), all of it is worth doing and counts for something, even if we cannot tangibly measure the positive outcomes that ripple out from it.

“Seeing you two together made me believe in love again”, a friend wrote in her card to us.

It’s been just over two months since Bradley and I got married, and I’m so happy and grateful that I believed that this kind of love was possible for me.

I’m so grateful I sought out a man who loves me for who I am, what I believe in, and how I treat other people. I’m grateful I didn’t accept anything less than this.

Finding this kind of love required literally rejecting any “love” that was less than this.

If a man tells you he’s into you, or even that he believes you’re “the one”, pay special attention… are their words backed up by their actions?

Do they make you a priority?

If not, make no mistake, their words don’t mean anything at all.

Let them show you how serious they are, and if they don’t, they’re not worth your time, because there is someone out there who will.

Believing they are out there is part of what gives you the strength to reject anything less.

There’s someone out there who won’t play games, and who will make a real commitment to demonstrating their love. You have to make a commitment too, and make that same level of effort, but that’s so so worth it when you’re with someone who reciprocates.

Thank you, Bradley, for being that for me. For loving me unconditionally, for always being in my corner, for giving me strength when I feel weak, and for making every bit of my life more enjoyable ❤️
