What a lovely day to take some toys to the beach and play in the sand! Thanks to Missouri American Water for getting the site ready for the MR340 Community finish line at the museum. The annual race takes canoeists, kayakers, standup paddleboarders and support crews down the Missouri River from Kaw Point (near Kansas City) to our Museum. Everyone is invited to join the finish line celebration, Frday, July 31 at the Boat House, to enjoy live music, food and drink, and the awards presentation.

Craig Fehrman, author of the bestselling “This Vast Enterprise,” shows son Henry a quote from the book in a Boat House display. The new display, about the financial side of the Lewis and Clark expedition, quotes page 97: “An army private would need to serve a decade or more to earn as much as a single canoe of furs was worth.” Fehrman’s book, published in April, uses the point of view of multiple individuals to bring the expedition to life. What an amazing achievement! The Missouri River Speed Record team and racers celebrated their sub-25 day dash down the Missouri River at the Museum. We were all treated to a preview of the upcoming film of the epic journey and picked up some souvenir Tshirts. So inspiring to see the love of the Missouri River and spirit of adventure still very much alive! Everyone these days is talking about how FAST they can travel the Missouri River by canoe or kayak. And it's really cool and exciting and all. But Lewis & Clark (and OF COURSE the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles 200 years later) took a whopping 71 days more or less to get from Three Forks to St. Louis. The river was very different then but the group was just as motivated.
