It's Humanities Councils Week.

From October 19–23, 2026, we’re teaming up with the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Mellon Foundation to celebrate how Humanities Councils bring people together.

As one of 56 state and jurisdictional councils in the U.S., Missouri Humanities helps make space for people to gather around art, humanities, and culture—right in our own community.

For example, we were thrilled to partner with Kansas City Public Library and Mid-Continent Public Library to host the fourth annual Heartland Book Fest. This free event brough the joy of reading to the spotlight in Kansas City, providing writing workshops, author talks, and creative activities to Missourians of all ages.

These in-person experiences invite us to learn, share, and discover something new
together.

Follow along throughout the week as we share how Councils make connection possible.

🎥 Last week, the Missouri Humanities team was in Perryville at the American Tractor Museum filming one of our Small Town Showcase 2026 community videos, and we can’t wait to share what we captured!

But while we edit Perryville's video, we need your help to choose the next five towns! 52 Missouri communities are hoping to be part of Small Town Showcase 2027, and your vote decides who gets their own short film and podcast episode with Missouri Humanities.

✅ Vote here: https://forms.gle/HStooGzWXTDr2ubt6
🗓️ Voting closes December 1, 2026 at 5:00 PM CST

Which town will be next? Cast your vote and help us tell their story! Questions? Email [email protected].

Every judge on the Missouri Supreme Court got there through the Missouri Plan.

Since 1940, Missouri's nonpartisan court plan has put merit first: a commission reviews candidates, the governor appoints from a short list, and voters decide whether judges stay on the bench.

That system opened the door for the Honorable Ann Covington, the court's first woman judge in 1989. This set the trajectory for today's historic female majority.

Have you ever wondered what it actually takes to turn a digital design into a real, physical quilt? For Kristen Reed Edens of Creating Quilts & Eden's Heirlooms, it starts with fabric spread across her studio table in Arnold, MO, and ends with something beautiful.

She's spent decades restoring antique quilts, piecing together custom memory quilts, and studying quilting (as a historian would), through the American Quilt Study Group. Now she's using that expertise to create two original quilts for our Stitched Together campaign: one that will stay with Missouri Humanities, and one that's headed home with a donor, and that donor could be YOU!
