Have you ever clicked through an online course and found yourself rereading the same sentence three times?

Not because it was difficult. But because it just wasn't connecting.

That feeling isn't random. Here's what's happening:

A lot of designers are using AI to work faster, and honestly, AI has gotten incredibly good at creating content.

It can write, design, summarize, and even sound surprisingly human. (Well... sometimes.)

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬, 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬.

An awkward transition, an instruction that's just a little unclear, an interaction that takes one click too many.

And those small moments add up. Most people won't notice them individually. But together, they shape the entire experience.

“Who we become in the process is greater than achieving the result.”

Man… that hits.

Because the result is rarely what changes you.

It’s everything you had to move through to get there.

The moments where you didn’t have clarity yet, but still had to decide.

The conversations that felt slightly uncomfortable, but couldn’t be avoided.

The days where progress was slow, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

That’s where something shifts.

Not loudly. Not all at once.

But in small ways you only notice later.

How you handle pressure.

How quickly you recover when things go sideways.

How you communicate when things aren’t perfectly clear.

And over time, those small shifts start to stack.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

“Business is about solving problems. Being a leader is getting excited about solving problems.”

Man, I love that.

Because if you’ve ever led a team, you know problems can wear on you.

Something breaks. A client needs something different. A process that used to work suddenly doesn’t. A teammate is stuck and trying hard not to show it.

And in those moments, people are paying attention to the energy we bring into the room.

Do we make it heavier?

Or do we help everyone take a breath and say, “Okay, let’s figure out what’s really going on here.”

That’s leadership to me.

Not pretending every problem is exciting. Not acting like hard things are easy.

But 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, and the 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

Teams don’t need leaders who make every problem disappear.

They need leaders who make problems feel solvable.

So this week, notice the next problem that shows up. Not as an interruption, but as a chance to bring a little more courage and curiosity into the room.

Too often, leaders confuse being polite with being kind.

And I get why. Difficult conversations are uncomfortable.

Telling someone the truth when you know it may land hard is uncomfortable.

So we soften it and we try to protect the person from the impact.

But sometimes, in trying to make the message easier to hear, we make it harder to understand.

And that does not actually help people move forward.

When you are leading a team through change, clarity is the highest form of care.

People need to know what is changing, why it matters, and what it means for them.

That does not mean being cold and careless. It means being honest in a way that is respectful, direct, and human.

Because when things are uncertain, people do not need perfect words.
They need steady leadership.

And they need to feel like someone is being real with them.

People may forget the exact project goals or quarterly metrics. But they will remember how they were treated when things got hard.

I was playing music with my kids the other day, and I had my banjo out.

It was one of those moments where my little family was kinda just doing their own thing….making noise, playing around…. and having fun.

And I had this thought...

Music only works when there is both freedom and structure.

You can play with feeling. You can bring your own style. You can add your own energy.

But there still has to be rhythm... melody... and timing.

And if you're playing with others, you have to be locked in together. Even as a solo musician, there are underlying patterns and structure that make the music work.

I keep thinking about how true that is for our own lives and for our teams.

You can have incredibly talented people, but if everyone is moving in a different direction, talent alone will only take you so far.

At the same time, great teams are made up of individuals who have first learned how to contribute, grow, and stay accountable themselves.

Early in Key Learning, I learned that lesson the hard way.

There were moments when I thought we had a people problem, when what we really had was a systems problem.

People cared. They were working hard. They wanted to do great work.

But we needed clearer roles, better feedback loops, and a shared understanding of what success looked like.

We needed systems that made it easier for people to contribute. Systems where feedback wasn't treated as criticism, but as part of the process that helps a good idea become a great one.

I think that's true of most meaningful work.

We're at our best when we have enough freedom to bring our own voice, and enough structure to build something together….

We love helping others with this too.

We often mistake friction for failure.

We see a massive challenge…a product delay, a market shift, a team conflict…and we burn thousands of calories trying to navigate around the mess instead of confronting it.

When my team recently asked me about learning experiences that actually last, I kept coming back to the power of 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

We often hear a great principle, nod our heads, and then forget it the second a crisis hits. To make a mindset stick, you have to practice it when the stakes are high.

That disaster that’s keeping you up tonight? In two years, it’s going to be the funny story you tell at the company offsite.

But to get to the "humor" part, you need a plan that doesn't collapse under pressure.

I developed a simple three-step formula to help my kids as they navigate hard things. And I’ve found it’s just as transformative for a scaling business:

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱. (The hardest part is always just starting. Stop the "cognitive friction" of worry and just move).

𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿. (Once you lean, the momentum shifts. The fog starts to lift).

𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. (This is where the magic happens. You look back and realize you didn't just survive... you scaled).

As leaders, our job is to remove friction so our teams can think, not just execute.

When we normalize "leaning in" as a repeated habit, we move our organizations from being paralyzed by crisis to being empowered explorers who know how to win.
