From University of Illinois Springfield to Amazon, Shreyas Bhide has turned his passion for problem-solving into a successful career as a Technical Program Manager at Amazon, where he leads technical programs, optimizes processes, and leverages ML/AI for automation.

Shreyas credits the UIS MIS program, along with certifications in Project Management, BPM, and Machine Learning and participation in SAM case competitions, for providing the practical experience and technical foundation that helped launch his career.

His advice to current students: "Look beyond the classroom. Get involved in student organizations, take on hands-on projects, and put yourself in situations where you have to think on your feet. That practical experience is what truly sets you apart when interviewing at top tech companies."

We are proud to celebrate Shreyas’ achievements and the impact he is making in the tech industry. Congratulations, Shreyas!

Think about the operational challenge facing an e-commerce fulfillment center: thousands of customer orders arriving continuously, hundreds of thousands of storage locations, and enormous pressure to get each order picked, packed, and shipped as quickly as possible. In this environment, every additional minute—and every additional step taken by a warehouse picker—matters.

We are delighted to highlight an excellent research article co-authored by Sevilay Onal, Associate Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at the University of Illinois Springfield, and published in the International Journal of Production Economics. Dr. Onal and her co-authors examine how smarter order-picking decisions can help fulfillment warehouses identify clusters of ordered items and create shorter, more efficient picking routes. Their proposed approach achieved up to a 40% improvement in picking/fulfillment time in their simulation.

The business implications are significant. Because order picking is one of the most labor- and cost-intensive activities in warehouse operations, the authors estimate that improvements of this magnitude could potentially translate into substantial reductions in labor costs and approximately 20% savings in total warehouse operating costs.

Another broader managerial lesson from this research is particularly important: investing in innovative warehouse design alone is not enough. Companies also need intelligent operational algorithms that allow them to fully capture the efficiencies those designs make possible. An excellent example of operations research connecting rigorous analytical thinking with a very practical question facing e-commerce and supply-chain leaders: How do we fulfill more customer orders, faster, while using our people and resources more efficiently?

Congratulations to Dr. Onal and her co-authors on this impactful and highly relevant work! It is always wonderful to see our colleagues producing research that connects academic rigor with important challenges facing industry.

Today, we are proud to spotlight Ashish Tetali, a distinguished University of Illinois Springfield Master of Arts in Accounting alumnus (Class of 2007), whose remarkable career demonstrates how a strong foundation in analytical thinking, integrity, and leadership can open doors across industries.

Ashish's professional journey has taken him from public service at the Illinois Department of Human Services, to helping scale global payment platforms at Mastercard – a Fortune 500 company – to co-inventing patents in emerging technologies, and today serving as Director of Strategic Initiatives at Veeam Software, where he leads initiatives at the intersection of data resilience, strategy, and AI trust.

Reflecting on his time at UIS, Ashish shares that the greatest gift of his education was not simply learning accounting, it was learning how to think.

"UIS taught me to follow the numbers, but also to understand the people, risks, and decisions behind them. Financials are not just a record of what has happened, they are a radar for what is possible."

He credits his UIS experience with developing the analytical discipline and strategic mindset that have guided his leadership throughout an extraordinary career. Even nearly two decades after graduation, he continues to trace his leadership philosophy back to the classrooms in Springfield, where he learned to see beyond the numbers and understand the human stories behind them.

Ashish's journey is also a reminder that careers are rarely linear. What began as a master's degree in accountancy became the foundation for leadership in technology, innovation, and global strategy. His advice to current students is timeless:

Know your values. Stay curious. Serve others. Take the next honest step. That is how leaders are built.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ashish reflects on UIS as the place where he and his wife built the early foundation of their lives together. Years that continue to shape his work, his mentoring, and the values he strives to instill in the next generation.

Congratulations, Ashish, on your outstanding career and thank you for representing UIS with excellence, humility, and purpose. Your story is an inspiration to our students, alumni, and the entire UIS community.

We're proud to highlight University of Illinois Springfield alumna Iliana Machado and the impact of her Master of Science in Finance degree.

Iliana credits the UIS M.S. in Finance program with strengthening her knowledge of financial markets, investments, and risk management while developing the analytical and critical-thinking skills needed to succeed in today's complex financial industry.

The confidence and expertise she gained at UIS helped support her professional growth from a Compliance Examiner at the National Futures Association (NFA) to her current role as a Regulatory Analyst with Cboe Global Markets. She says the program challenged her to solve complex problems and apply financial concepts to real-world situations.

She is especially grateful for the support and guidance of UIS faculty, whose practical approach to teaching made a lasting impact on her education and career.

Congratulations, Iliana, on your success and for representing UIS so well!
