DASH OF DATA
Early literacy includes the skills children start building from birth to age five. These early experiences help their brains grow and support language, thinking, social, and emotional development.
At HCS Head Start 69% of preschool students are currently meeting or exceeding expectations in the area of literacy. This is an 18% increase compared with the Fall of 2025.
In honor of National Hamburger Day, we are highlighting something that happens every day at HCS Head Start.
Nutritious meals and snacks are an important part of how we support children’s growth and development. Providing consistent access to healthy food helps children stay focused, build energy for learning, and develop lifelong habits.
At HCS Head Start, mealtime is also a time for connection. Children gather, share conversations, and build social skills while enjoying a meal together. It is all part of creating an environment where children feel supported, cared for, and ready to learn.

Our recent Professional Development Day brought our team together for a full day of learning and connection, all centered on strengthening how we support children and families across our communities. Opportunities like this help ensure our staff continue to build the knowledge and skills that make a lasting impact every day.
Also celebrated were the people who help make our mission possible. Congratulations to this year’s Head Start Hero Award recipients, our Volunteer Award honorees, and the recipient of the Janis Santos Scholarship Award. We also took time to recognize two dedicated team members on their retirement and thank them for their years of service and commitment.
Moments like these reflect the heart of Head Start. A team committed to learning, supporting one another, and making a difference for children and families.

RESOURCE ROUND UP
This month, we’re highlighting Parent Villages, an organization dedicated to supporting families through education and connection.
Parent Villages offers two generational programs designed to nurture both children and caregivers, with a focus on families impacted by violence and trauma. Their approach centers on building strong, healthy relationships and creating a supportive community for growth and healing.
At HCS Head Start, we know that when families are supported, children thrive. We’re proud to share resources that help strengthen and uplift our community.

May often means the return of outdoor farmer's markets in local communities. Spend some time with your family talking about the different textures and colors you see as you take a walk through the market together. Ask your child questions about what fruits or vegetables might be new to them, and give it a try together! Maybe this trip will inspire a new favorite snack for you and your family.

Tomorrow is International Day of Families, a time to recognize the strength, support, and connection that families bring to our communities.
Strong families build strong futures. At HCS Head Start, we know that when families feel supported, children are better able to learn, grow, and thrive. We recognize that families can look different in so many ways – with every family bringing its own strengths, traditions, and experiences to the life of a little one in order to help shape their future.
This is a big reason why at HCS Head Start we focus on building strong partnerships with families, striving to create spaces for connection, and providing resources that support the well-being of the whole family.
Every day, we’re proud to work alongside families as they nurture, guide, and inspire the next generation.
