The Forest Park Arboretum will provide an educational showcase for highlighting the beauty and diversity of the trees and plants growing in the Park.

03/17/2023

We’re ready to move forward with our work on getting the Arboretum at Forest Park ready for our 2023 season and to advance its role in helping to teach folks about trees and forests.

Why not consider joining us as an ‘Arboretum Assistant and help us to tag trees, prune shrubs and ornamental plants and helping with educational events throughout the year.

We have two training sessions lined up for this Spring, which will get you up to speed on how you can join the tree tagging initiative, and learn a bit about tree identification along the way.

A Venice Beautification Project Helps Fight Climate Change 12/12/2019

A low-tech solution to combat global warming is taking root in cities from Los Angeles to our own Venice, Florida. “There is a magic machine that sucks carbon out of the air, costs very little and builds itself,” says climate change activist and writer George Monbiot. “It’s called a tree.”

Planting the seeds for sustainable agriculture 12/11/2019

A group of Newton team members recently went on a visit to an underground farm in Clapham, to learn more about innovations in agriculture. Agricultural developments inform our ‘Earth matters’, ‘smart revolution’ and ‘population dynamics’ themes, as growing food scarcity and concerns over the health of the planet are sparking all sorts of new technological inventions. This is the first underground farm in the UK.[1] It occupies a deserted World War II shelter beneath the city, and distributes food locally in London.

Richer understanding of terrestrial carbon cycles aids more accurate climate change modelling 12/10/2019

Terrestrial ecosystems absorb 25-30 % of fossil fuel carbon emissions. Photosynthesis by plants removes the largest amount of carbon from the atmosphere to make sugars that fuel plant growth. Plants and soil decomposers also release CO2 back to the atmosphere through respiration.

The terrestrial biosphere is currently a net CO2 sink because of a small imbalance between photosynthesis and respiration.

Richer understanding of terrestrial carbon cycles aids more accurate climate change modelling Quantifying the carbon storage potential of terrestrial ecosystems will have to take account of the relative contributions of photosynthesis and respiration to the global carbon cycle. The SOLCA project developed an ambitious approach to tackle this challenge.

Sustainable Forest Management 12/09/2019

The U.S. paper and wood products industry plays an important role in ensuring sustainable forest management and helping keep forests as forests. Today, one-third of the U.S. is forested, and there are more trees than there were on the first Earth Day celebration nearly 50 years ago.
