WEEK 3: STATEWIDE OFFICES MATTER 🗳️

When you vote, you may hear a lot about the biggest races. But statewide leaders also make decisions that affect all of us and our community.

This week, learn about the candidates running for statewide office in Massachusetts. Also, take a few minutes to understand what each office does.

Governor: Leads the state, signs or vetoes laws, and appoints key state leaders and judges.
Lieutenant Governor: Helps the Governor and takes over if the Governor cannot serve.
Attorney General: Serves as the state’s top lawyer and protects consumers and the public.
Secretary of the Commonwealth: Runs state elections, keeps official records, and registers businesses.
State Treasurer: Manages the state’s money, investments, lottery, and unclaimed property.
State Auditor: Checks how state agencies spend public money and looks for waste or fraud.
Other Elected State Leaders

Governor’s Council: Reviews and votes on appointments of judges and certain other officials.
State Senators: Represent districts and help write and vote on state laws and the budget.
State Representatives: Represent local districts and help write and vote on state laws and the budget.
Before you vote, ask: What does this office do? Who are the candidates? What experience do they have? What issues are important to them? How could their decisions affect Springfield?

Building Power (IRL) — In Real Life

With support from the Public Health Institute of Western MA, the Urban League of Springfield took youth leadership beyond the classroom and into the real world.

Over five days, our youth leaders traveled, learned, connected, and challenged themselves through hands-on experiences designed to build the skills they need to lead — teamwork, networking, public speaking, research, self-care, advocacy, and organizing.

They logged out of the distractions and locked in on their futures — building confidence, making real-life connections, and discovering the power of their own voices.

This is what getting READY looks like.

Ready for college. Ready for careers. Ready to lead. Ready for the future.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our friend, Ed Cohen.

For many years, Ed generously shared his extraordinary talent with the Urban League of Springfield and Camp Atwater, capturing moments that told our story better than words ever could. Through his camera lens, he preserved the joy of our campers, the pride of our scholars, the strength of our community, and the spirit of generations who have been touched by our work.

Ed wasn’t just taking photographs—he was preserving our history. Many of the images we cherish today exist because he was there, quietly documenting the people, places, and moments that matter most.

We are deeply grateful for his kindness, his generosity, and the legacy he leaves behind through the thousands of memories he helped preserve.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.

Thank you, Ed, for helping us see the beauty in our community and ensuring that its story will continue to be told for generations to come.

You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Rest in peace.

Let’s honor and celebrate the life of Henry M. Thomas III as family, friends, and community members gather for his Homegoing Service on Monday June 8, 2026.

Henry’s legacy of service, leadership, love, and dedication to our community will continue to inspire generations to come. While we mourn his passing, we also give thanks for a life that made a lasting impact on so many.
