In honor of Native American Heritage month, Sangamon Experience recognizes those who once lived on the land we now occupy. Land acknowledgements are statements that recognize and respect the indigenous people and the relationship they have with the land that was originally theirs. Illinois was home to numerous tribes including the Kickapoo, Potawatomi, Sauk, Kaskaskia, Peoria, Miami, Kaw, and many others. Be sure to check out the land acknowledgment that will appear in the Kickapoo exhibit at Sangamon Experience when we open next year!
