LIFE IN THE 1950S (Author Unknown)
Recited aloud by Karen Holmes Hagen:

Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot,
Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot.
There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me,
For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born, Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was p**n.
We learned to gut a muffler, we washed our hair at dawn, We spread our crinolines to dry in circles on the lawn.
We longed for love and romance and waited for our Prince, And Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since. We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee’
And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Only girls wore earrings then, and three was one too many,
And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.
And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see
A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice,

And when they made a movie, they never made it twice.
We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three, Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me. Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp,
And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp. We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T,
And Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me. We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go,
At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe.
For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be,
And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead,
And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson and Zeppelins were not Led. And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkeys lived in trees, Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We'd never heard of microwaves or telephones in cars,
And babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars.

And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free, And dorms were never co-ed in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag,
And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag. And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea, And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Buicks came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks, And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks. And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee,
And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me.
We had no Crest with fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues,
We all wore superstructure bras, designed by Howard Hughes
We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea
Or prime-time ads for personal things in the Land That Made Me, Me.
There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill,
And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill.

And middle-aged was thirty-five and old was forty-three, And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me.
But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say,
And now instead of Maybelline, we swear by Retin-A.
They send us invitations to join AARP,
We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, Me.
So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans, And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines. And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be, Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me, Me.

SHS Class of 1962 Holds 60th Anniversary Reunion

On October 7, about 30 alumni of the Class of 1962 met at the Springfield to celebrate 60 years (and a few months more) since graduating high school. And as the old cliche goes, “a good time was had by all.” The chef at the Motorboat Club put out a delicious array of hors d’oeuvres and canapés. The background music, courtesy of Spotify, included every Billboard Magazine #1 hit song played on the air during our years as high schoolers. Looking at the playlist (which is posted elsewhere on this page) proves that we had some incredibly good music when we were teens.

The main event was a 35-question trivia quiz (also to be found on the page) focusing of events that occurred during our student days. You can try it yourself. It’s pretty tough. The quiz was supposed to be just for fun, but Chip Filson had visited the school earlier in the day and the staff gave him a bunch of very nice swag, including three varsity jackets with the school’s blazon on the front, but were rejected because the trim, which had been ordered in black, was delivered in blue. So we punted and gave them away as prizes for the top scorers.
Karen Whiteside Hagen recited a Poem entitled “Life in the 50’s” (or perhaps “The Land that Made Me, Me”) which Chip had sent in a couple of weeks earlier. It has been posted many times on the internet, and is is now posted here as well.

The Committee that organized this reunion has declared that this would be the last one, but several people commented that they would like to see at least one more, perhaps in five years. We’ll see how that plays out in the future. This page is a good place to make your views known. If you would like to reunite once more, post a comment. Perhaps the committee will change its mind.

Remember Oct 12-14, 2012 is fast approaching as days do these days. See you there in thought or body. :) If you can't make the meeting please send any suggestions you want to share to any of us. :)

05/26/2011

Our next scheduled meeting to plan the 50th Reunion is June 9, 2011 at Lyn Wainwright Sisson's home at 6:45. If you want to eat together before, plan on meeting at the KofC west a ways at 5:00. If you let Darlene know, she can make a reservation. This is exciting. I have made a few contacts by working on the mailing list. :)

05/19/2011

We need some comments and photos. Can anyone help out with this need? Help Me!! Marilyn :) Go to my profile for a note I wrote to be on this page. What can I say. I am a novice.

Choreography 09/25/2010

This is a Flash Mob West Coast Swing Dance that I am teaching at Prairie Land Dance Club. This dance choreographed dance originated with a couple in Houston. Did you know that dancing helps to keep you young. Do you all remember the sock hops we had after school and at the YWCA on Friday nights. Marilyn :)
