Riverside's Books with Baldwin class is reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and recently brought the story to life by carving their own pumpkins for the Headless Horseman. The group asked the school to vote on their favorite pumpkin head and Everett & Maverick were the creators of the winning design!

Earlier this week the gifted a dictionary to every third grade student at Union Street School as part of their long standing Dictionary Project. The project, founded by Mary French of Charleston, South Carolina focuses on supporting literacy as children transition from learning how to read to learning how to find and use information. For more than 20 years, the Elks have continued to bring this wonderful tradition to local third graders.

In addition to thousands of words, these dictionaries are filled with information about the U.S. Constitution, presidents, the 50 states, world maps, and so much more. It’s a resource students can explore now and continue using for years to come.

We're so grateful to our local Springfield Vermont Elks Lodge #1560 for continuing this meaningful tradition and helping put a world of knowledge in the hands of our students. Thank you!

This Thursday, we will be at Riverside Middle School for a BBQ dinner from 5:30-6PM followed by teacher meet-and greets and tours of the building from 6-7 PM.

Your energy, thoughtfulness and commitment to learning are exactly the kinds of qualities that help strengthen our school community! We are proud to celebrate you and your role in representing Springfield and making your voice heard. Congratulations!

Leadership

Rowan Dressel is a ninth grader at Springfield High School with a passion for writing and journalism. He plans to go to college and build a career in the field. His VSAC GEAR UP counselor, Jessi Krause-Heron, describes him as magnetic and thoughtful, "one of those students who pushes the group to get the most out of every lesson."

Rowan says SEEDS leadership training, offered through VSAC's GEAR UP, has been one of the highlights of his time in school so far. Held at Vermont State Randolph, the SEEDS overnight leadership camp helps Vermont middle and high school students build confidence and social-emotional skills.

"From the moment Rowan walked into his first meeting, I could tell he was going to lead the group to squeeze the value from every lesson," Krause-Heron says. "He has made our group conversations more interesting and is always engaged and eager to learn and share his knowledge with others. The positive energy and enthusiasm he brings to every space he enters is palpable and appreciated by educators and students. He even wrote the school newsletter at Riverside Middle School. We are truly lucky to have Rowan in VSAC’s GEAR UP program!"
