Christopher's Framework Story
"Imagine that you are on a design team trying to solve a problem that has surfaced in your city. The problem needs to be solved quickly in order to save resources in your city. You gather your teammates and start brainstorming solutions to the problem. All of the sudden, you have multiple possible solutions from multiple team members and your team gets caught up trying to decide which solution to choose. The team is starting to go off into multiple ârabbit trailsâ and you are moving further away from the goal. What do you as an individual need to do in order to pick the best solution and to bring your team back together? You hop in as the leader for the team! As the leader, you listen to everyone's ideas and generate a chart of solutions that would work the best. Talk out each solution and then narrow down the options. Then, you have a voting session with every member of the team. Leadership is a very essential element for a person to have. With my time with SkillsUSA, I have developed my leadership skills greatly in order to help not only my teams that Iâm on, but also the future teams that could be developed from my example. Being a leader is not being the person in charge, a leader is a person with many attributes. Attributes of a good leader include: ability to delegate, strong communication skills, team working abilities, and understanding of what the goal that is needing to be achieved. As a leader, you demonstrate these attributes through actions. For delegation of tasks, you will need to know your team. You will need to know each team memberâs strengths, weaknesses, and knowledge. In communication, you need to not only know how to speak to your teammates, but also listen to them. A lot of people get only the first part of communication and not both. If you can speak and listen to your team, then that will put you in a better position and a stronger communicator. For team working, you need to be able to still be part of the team by giving ideas and cooperating with your teammates. Finally, you need to know what the goal you are trying to achieve is. This will keep your tasks in line for what needs to be done, and it will also keep your team focused on their tasks. Being involved in many teams has allowed me to develop these skills. It has also given me the opportunity to practice these skills. That is one of the most important things to do. Practice the skills of being a leader so you can develop yourself. Now that you have developed these skills to be a leader in the workplace, then your team can get to a solution faster, and more efficiently. A leader is not born, they are made!"
How do you plan to serve SkillsUSA?
âEvery champion was once a contender that refused to give up.â - Sylvester Stallone. My name is Christopher Anderson and I am interested in serving as a National Officer for the SkillsUSA Organization. This quote by Sylvester Stallone goes to say that everyone is a contender, but the champion is the one who refuses to give up at any given moment. It represents perseverance, which is needed to be successful. SkillsUSA has taught me many essential skills that are needed to become successful in the world of work and as a leader. I have been very active with SkillsUSA for the last two years; serving as Chapter and District student leadership teams, to leadership training and interactive activities with my peers. I am interested in becoming a National Officer because I want to serve not only the organization, but its members, which is the most important element of SkillsUSA.
As a National Officer, one of my goals I want to accomplish during my term is to create a better communication form from the national level all the way down each individual chapter to help make a smooth transition from online learning, training, competitions, back to in-person activities. One of the main Framework Elements of being a National Officer is being able to communicate efficiently and effectively with your peers and fellow officers. My experience with SkillsUSA the last two years has taught me the importance of communication, especially in this last year. With the transition from online to in-person, it is going to be essential for the National Office to communicate with everyone. Not just with each individual region, but all the districts and chapters. I have noticed over the last year that the communication between the multi-level organization structure of chapters to nationals has not been very clear. It is very important that the communication is clear and concise so that every member knows what is going on and that there wonât be any confusion as to what is happening in the organization.
One thing that I think would be the best solution is to use SkillsUSA Connect and the National Website as a communication hub. I know that SkillsUSA Connect was originally created for communicating between the multi-level organization structure of chapters to nationals, but it does not stay up to date and there have only been a couple opportunities that have come out of using SkillsUSA Connect. In addition, updating the notification center on SkillsUSA Connect so that in the future an event is scheduled, every member would receive a notification about that particular event.
In conclusion, SkillsUSA has taught me a lot and I would love to continue to use these skills that I have learned, and implement them into my career and National Office. One of the most important elements as we transition is going to be communication. If every member communicates with everyone, I have no doubt that we can make this transition smooth and rewarding!"
