Coping with mental illness is difficult. Not only do you have to fight the illness but you also fight the stigma attached to it. For men, the fear of looking weak or unmanly adds to this strain. Anger, shame and other defenses can kick in as a means of self-protection but may ultimately prevent men from seeking treatment.
Your matter, and your experience matters, mental health is a vital part of being human and you are worth the energy it takes to seek help.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, which is also known as Freedom Day, we are reminded that there is a difference between “not enslaved” and “free.” Just as there is a difference between “not dead” and “alive.” Just as there is a difference between “not sick” and “healthy.” And just as there is a difference between “not racist” and “anti-racist.”
What happens at the intersection of mental health and one’s experience as a member of the Black community? While the experience of being Black in America varies tremendously, there are shared cultural factors that play a role in helping define mental health and supporting well-being, resiliency and healing.

NAACP Eugene Springfield Oregon Unit 1119 provides vital resources and education for the community and mental health: Community Centered Health Care and increasing access to care for underserved community members, community-based approaches, and expanding pathways to healthcare careers.
Access to healthcare remains one of the most important factors in building healthy, thriving communities. Yet many individuals and families continue to face barriers to receiving the care, information, and support they need.
