Join us in the William Blizard Gallery to experience Eternal: Elements, a collaboration between visual artist LESN101 and music producer NAGO as they compose paintings and songs alongside each other, showcasing their artistic processes in real time. Focusing on the classical elements for inspiration, LESN101 and NAGO demonstrate that the quality of composition is not governed by the complexity of materials, but by the strength of the cypher. Eternal: Elements is part of the Wiggle Room art exhibit.

The Springfield College School of Arts and Sciences hosted the 13th annual Arts and Humanities Speaker Series on Thursday, October 15, officially kicking off Homecoming Weekend. This year's event featured two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer and Springfield, Mass., native Ruth E. Carter.

Celebrated for her work in bringing to life the vibrant and culturally rich costumes of Black Panther, Carter made history as the first Black person to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, securing Marvel Studios' first Oscar in the process. She repeated this groundbreaking success with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to become the first Black woman to win multiple Academy Awards in any category and the first costume designer to win for both a feature film and its sequel. Most recently, for her work in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, Carter earned her fifth Academy Award nomination, becoming the most nominated Black woman in Oscar history.

The event was once again made possible through the endowed support of Carlton ’63 and Lucille Sedgeley.

Alumnus Brian Pietrosimone ’05, PhD, was this year's featured speaker at the 53rd annual Peter V. Karpovich Lecture. The Peter V. Karpovich Lecture celebrates academics and strides in the fields of exercise physiology, research, sports medicine, and other related scientific aspects of physical education.

Pietrosimone is a current professor of Athletic Training in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. His lecture explored the growing evidence linking biomechanics to joint biology and discuss how these discoveries are transforming our understanding of rehabilitation. At UNC, Pietrosimone also serves as director of the MOTION Science Institute and co-director of the UNC Sports Medicine Institute.

“To be asked to be the keynote speaker at the Peter V. Karpovich Lecture is a huge honor,” expressed Pietrosimone. “The names associated with the Karpovich Lecture are legends, and they are people who taught me so much as a student. I am very honored to come back to campus and be a part of the Karpovich Lecture, and it was awesome to see so many familiar faces.”

An Evening With Ruth E. Carter
A Trailblazing, Two-time Academy Award-Winning Costume Designer

Field House, located inside the Wellness & Recreation Complex at Springfield College

Ruth E. Carter is an Academy Award-winning costume designer whose groundbreaking work has shaped some of film’s most iconic stories. She made history as the first Black person to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Black Panther, later becoming the first Black woman to win multiple Academy Awards and the first costume designer to win for both a film and its sequel with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With more than three decades of experience and over 70 credits across film, television, and theater, Carter’s celebrated work includes Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, Amistad, Selma, and Coming 2 America. Most recently, her work on Ryan Coogler’s Sinners earned her fifth Oscar nomination, making her the most nominated Black woman in Academy Awards history.

A Springfield native, Carter remains deeply connected to her hometown, where her achievements have been honored with a mural and the key to the city.

Book signing will follow the lecture.

The Pride Strides program is a "Couch to 5k" program that was developed in partnership with the Office of YMCA Relations, the Counseling Center, and Office of Health Promotion.

The group of runners supports two, three-mile runs per week. Over the course of the next 10 weeks, the running group will be training for the Hot Chocolate Run in Northampton, which supports Domestic Violence Awareness.

Runners and walkers of all abilities are encouraged to attend. The group will find a pace that works for everyone. Though running is the focus of the program, community building is at the heart of it. All participants are encouraged to share a post-run meal together as time allows. This program is open to all students (graduate and undergraduate), faculty, and staff.
