Can a delivery platform run entirely by students help solve a campus economy? Teams in WNE's 2026 Summer Innovation Fellowship are exploring answers like this at the intersection of finance and technology.

Now in its third year, sponsored by MassMutual and Country Bank, the fellowship brought together student ventures including Divault, turning alternative data into real-time financial intelligence; Photic, creating new pathways to creditworthiness for people without traditional credit histories; and Kodu, a verified student-to-student delivery platform built by students from WNE and Colombia's Universidad de los Andes.

"These startups demonstrate how entrepreneurship and technology can come together to create meaningful impact," said Charles Mutigwe, professor of business and entrepreneurship.

Nearly 45 middle and high school students spent a week on WNE's campus this past June for Golden Bear Summer Camp, a free program hosted by the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Campers got hands-on exposure to health sciences through WNE's teaching laboratories, patient care activities, and direct interaction with faculty and healthcare professionals. This year's program also launched a new partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western and Central Massachusetts, connecting students with mentors, local leaders, and employers.

Several former campers have gone on to graduate from WNE's Doctor of Pharmacy program, including this year's PharmD summer intern.

"I stepped on this campus at 17 years old, and I've never left."

That's Steven Tremblay '87/G'91, this year's recipient of the Michael A. Serafino Alumnus of the Year Award, reflecting on a lifelong connection to Western New England University that spans more than 38 years in the aerospace and defense industry and an ongoing commitment as an active alumnus, trustee, and supporter of WNE.

Tremblay was one of three honorees celebrated at this year's Alumni Awards. Klaire Bielonko '17 received the Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award, recognized for her leadership, service, and continued involvement with WNE, including mentoring students. Laura Sturgis BoulΓ© '01/G'02 received the Alumni Achievement Award, honored for her professional success and her enduring commitment to WNE.

As President Dr. Joseph C. Hartman shared at the ceremony, "The alumni play an equally important role...raising us up in ways we may not even think about."

"Jimmy was always the kindest person in the room."

That's how Paul Frisone '93, a former teammate of James "Hoss" Horbal '93, remembers him.

In the fall of 1989, Chris Clark '94 stepped onto campus with two clear goals: play football and earn a degree. Along the way, he built bonds with teammates that became a brotherhood, with Horbal at its center.

When Horbal passed away unexpectedly in 2024, Clark reached out to WNE head football coach Jason Lebeau, who proposed dedicating new sideline benches in Horbal's name. Clark and his teammates funded the benches, unveiled ahead of Golden Bear Weekend on October 4, 2025.

"When future players see his name behind those benches, I want them to remember the importance of giving back and being a good person," Clark said. "When in doubt, do the right thing. That's what he stood for."
