A first visit to a new church can come with a lot of unknowns. For families impacted by disability, there can be even more questions.

This weekend at New Life Fellowship, we talked about what it looks like to come alongside families from the moment they walk through the doors.

Through their 1:1 buddy program, individuals impacted by disability have someone who can get to know them, walk alongside them, and help them feel at home in the life of the church.

This is what it looks like to make room for families in a practical, personal way.

‪New Life Fellowship, thank you for choosing to come alongside families in your community. We are grateful for churches willing to learn, prepare, and Make Jesus Accessible!

Thank you for highlighting the need for EVERY church to be prepared to welcome and include individuals and families impacted by disability in their communities. The great commission includes people with and without disability. 🙏💚

This Sunday, we observe Disability Awareness Day. Ability Tree aims to "make Jesus accessible" by providing R.E.S.T. (Recreation, Education, Support, & Training) for families impacted by disability.

Sometimes the biggest barrier to reaching a family impacted by disability is simply our attitude.

Maybe we assume a person won’t be able to participate. Maybe we’re afraid we’ll say the wrong thing. Maybe we see disability before we see the person.

Those assumptions can make a family impacted by disability feel like a burden.

Every person is created in the image of God. Every person has God-given gifts. Every family deserves the opportunity to be welcomed, included, and discipled in the life of the Church. That starts with us being willing to see people, get to know them, and make room for them.

You don’t have to be an expert. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You simply have to want to love and get to know them! 💚

Want to find out how your church can remove these attitudinal barriers? Sign up for a 30-minute conversation with our team. We’ll talk through what removing barriers can look like in your church and how Ability Tree can come alongside you. Link in the bio.

The first words we heard from the pastor at River Hills Church set the tone for the entire weekend.

“Lord, give me the people in South Sioux that no other church wants.”

That prayer reflects the heart of a church that is preparing for EVERY person God brings through its doors.💚

This weekend was filled with conversations, leadership training, prayer, and time with families impacted by disability.

We’re grateful for churches like River Hills that are taking intentional steps to Make Jesus Accessible in their community.

We believe every church can take that step! It doesn’t take having all the answers. It begins with a heart that says, “Lord, show us who we’re missing.”
