We use this in jewelry and people love it. A little piece of auto history in wearable art. The colors give a fantastic display of patterns every time we work a rough piece into a cabochon, revealing an assortment of colors.
During the mid-20th century, car factories unknowingly created a material that would later be treasured as a kind of accidental gemstone. Layers of enamel paint overspray built up on machinery, hardened through repeated baking cycles, and eventually formed what is now called fordite. 🚗
When cut and polished, fordite reveals swirling bands of vivid colors, often stacked in hundreds of layers. These colors reflect the automotive paint trends of their era, from muted tones of the early 20th century to the bold metallic shades of the 1960s and 70s. 🎨
Much of it comes from Detroit and other auto-producing regions, where production methods before the 1980s allowed overspray to accumulate. Today, collectors and jewelers prize it for its unique history and appearance, turning what was once industrial waste into cabochons, pendants, cufflinks, and more.

💡 Did you know? Ancient Egyptians associated chrysocolla with communication and wisdom, often carving it into amulets.
💬 Have you ever collected a specimen of chrysocolla?
