Sustainability at STCC Library: Uncovering the Decades of Deceit

The STCC Library is proud to launch our latest display series focused on Sustainability and Climate Change. This month, we are diving deep into the critical research surrounding our planet’s future and the forces that have shaped our current climate crisis.

The Case Against Fossil Fuel Fraud

One of the primary resources featured in our display is the May 2025 report from the Union of Concerned Scientists, titled "Decades of Deceit”. This report sheds light on the legal and ethical battles currently unfolding as states and cities hold major fossil fuel companies accountable for climate damages.

What the research reveals:

Early Warnings: As early as 1980, industry scientists warned that fossil fuel use could lead to "globally catastrophic effects."

The Deception Strategy: Internal documents from 1998 reveal a "Roadmap" designed to intentionally increase public uncertainty about climate science to protect corporate profits.

Massive Impact: Research shows that just 122 companies are responsible for over 94% of all industrial Co2 emissions since 1959.

Calls for Justice: Advocates are now pushing for these corporations to stop greenwashing, end the obstruction of climate policy, and pay their fair share for climate adaptation.

We are committed to bringing you the best resources on campus. We believe that access to information is the first step toward a sustainable future.

Coming soon: Keep an eye on our page for a follow-up post where we will detail the specific books and other resources available right here at the STCC

Library to help you navigate these complex issues.
