Mid-America OSHA Education Center Success Story: From Electrician to Trusted Safety Leader

“SPCP gave me the knowledge and skills to advance my safety career with confidence.”—Travis Baldwin

After moving from field work as an electrician into a safety role, I enrolled in the Safety Professional Certificate Program (SPCP) to build my knowledge and confidence. I found each class fun, useful, and engaging. Instructors made sure I could use what I learned, while peers in many fields shared real cases, ideas, and lessons. Those talks also helped me form a safety network. The program gave me a firm base for my next goal: the Certified Health and Safety Technician (CHST) exam. I credit SPCP with helping me pass on my first try. “I don’t believe I would have passed the first try without going through the SPCP first.” For me, the program was more than a set of classes; it was a clear path from being new to safety to serving others with sound, ready answers.

After completing SPCP, I helped improve my company’s training and safety programs. Employees now rely on me for prompt answers and clear guidance on the safest way to do their work. I also work with sales staff during project planning so risks and controls can be addressed before crews reach the site. My new skills have made me a trusted resource and helped my company act sooner to keep our jobs safe. I strongly recommend SPCP for new safety professionals and anyone seeking to excel and grow in a safety career.

Understanding electrical hazards is an important part of protecting employees and maintaining a safe workplace.

Join Mid-America OSHA Education Center for **OSHA 3095: Electrical Standards**, a four-day course focused on electrical-hazard recognition, OSHA requirements and practical corrective measures.

Participants will review topics such as grounding, GFCI protection, electrical equipment, safe-work practices, testing equipment and applicable OSHA and NEC requirements.

Electrical safety remains a serious workplace concern. In 2024, **130 U.S. workers died from exposure to electricity**, and electrical incidents caused **5,180 injuries involving days away from work during 2023–2024**.

In addition to the human impact, electrical incidents may result in OSHA citations, operational disruption, insurance claims and legal costs. Training can help organizations identify hazards earlier and improve compliance before an incident occurs.
