Have you ever thought about what it would be like to have thoughts and feelings you needed to communicate but were unable to? Imagine if something was hurting you and there was someone nearby that could help you but you couldn't speak. How would you feel? Helpless? Scared? Frustrated?
At Journey School, we never want a student to feel this way! Because of that, we use multiple modes of communication including but not limited to sign language, AAC systems, and communication boards. Everyone has something to say and everyone deserves to be heard.

TBRI®: Trust-Based Relational Intervention®

Every Tuesday for the next few weeks, we will be sharing about Trauma, how it affects the student, their brain, and how they learn and connect with others. Trauma doesn't have to be from abuse or neglect, but can also include medical trauma, like a NICU stay or complex medical conditions or procedures, as well as the loss of a family member and many other things. TBRI is an incredible program designed to help rewire the child's brain, help them move past the trauma, and be able to trust as well as learn. We use these techniques at Journey School! We hope that the videos and information we share will provide you with tools to better connect and communicate with children who have experienced any form of trauma.

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, we need to teach the way they learn."

At Journey School, each child is taught as an individual. They are not compared to another student or expected to learn or grow at the same pace as anyone else. Each student is created uniquely and perfectly and deserves to learn exactly how they need to.

We want to say a HUGE thank you to Church Project and their group of 9th grade girls who came and raked our school yard and cleaned windows and our ball pit. They worked so hard and were such a blessing.

Today we went on a field trip to the Downtown Aquarium! Everyone had a wonderful time! Some of our students were even brave enough to touch and feed the stingrays!

Our Prospectors class has been working hard on their garden! They water, measure growth, and track progress during the week. The class has enjoyed watching their plants thrive and have even harvested a strawberry!

Every month, we host a parent meeting and support group. This is a requirement of our Journey School families but is open to the public! Any family that has a child with differing abilities can "Join the Circle" and build community with other families. This month, we will have a guest speaker coming to give us information on estate planning. We hope you will put it on your calendar!

Happy Birthday to Ms. Maggie! She is such a gift to our school and such a wonderful teacher to the Trailblazers! Journey School would not the be the same without her.

Our staff returned to campus today! We received an amazing training by the TBRI practitioners from Montgomery County CASA. They gave us some wonderful new strategies to make connections with our students. The rest of the day was spent preparing for the first day of the 2023 semester and renewing CPR certifications. We can’t WAIT for our students to come back to school tomorrow!

2022 has been a year of change for Journey School. New campus, new teachers, new students, new connections, new friendships, new words, new discoveries... the list could go on forever! God has blessed Journey School and we can not wait to see what 2023 will bring!

The Mariners loved playing and exploring in their new Christmas themed sensory bins. We are so thankful for the Journey School Family that made and donated these to our school!

Last week in life skills, the Prospectors class learned how to follow a recipe and made Christmas cookies! They were delicious! Baking cookies is such a fun holiday tradition. What are your favorite holiday cookies?

The depth of the thankfulness we are feeling today is truly indescribable. This past year has come with change, loss, indescribable grief & alongside of the struggles each person has faced has come growth & connection & true joy. We pray as you walk through this Thanksgiving, whether in joy or pain, that you would know how dear you are to God & sense His nearness.
