Today one of my students was the teacher. She was prepared with lesson plans typed out and all activities ready. She gave me a run for my money. Man... I had to repeat over half of a Dr Seuss book and write it correctly (from memory). I did Morse code with a broken buzzer for a 9 or 10 letter word. (If you don’t know all that implies... that’s ok- just clap for both of us) My puzzle was a real mind bender and of course I didn’t let her give me any tips. I had a headache when I was done. But you guys... for her to give me an activity to write that was over half of a book - she had to fluently read that book. For me to do a 10 letter word, she first had to spell and know the meaning and part of speech of that word. Oh you guys.... this was a celebration.
I’m probably not taking additional students next year so I can give my time to foster kids... (but I have other therapists who are!!!) If you do hear me, personally, opening a spot... share it with everyone. Here’s the deal... my secret is that this work I do is not me. It’s my trust in God. It’s His miracle. If I could only tell you the stories... the success... oh wow. Today was huge for me. Just know - This was big. This kid has come a loooong way. I’m so proud. I can’t wait to see what next year will bring. This year has brought such huge victory! In the midst of extreme turbulence. I’ve even been exploring becoming a nonprofit so I can help more kids who can’t afford my therapy. But that sounds like so much work... and I’m already willing to give my time. Those of you with non-profits.... advice is welcome. Everyone else - celebrate with me! This student rocked!!! Tell her good job and I will pass on every message!
I love what I do!!! Changing lives.... one student at a time.

Today's Tip - Take a walk or stand in the sun for 30 minutes and think thankful thoughts.
That's of foremost importance right now in the midst of this world crisis. In this time of home-bound education, It's not just about education or safety, the emotional, spiritual, and physical needs are just or more important than the academic. Vitamin D and a dose of thankfulness will do wonders. Get outside and discuss the things you are thankful for. The Thinking and Learning values a holistic approach to working with children.
What are your thankful thoughts?

I wish I kept count of how many families come to me after trying numerous tutors/ therapies / fix-it-quick programs. I’m happy to say that after my program- the search is over and they graduate with amazing results. NILD works! I love my job! ❤️

A beautiful story of life-changing, positive gains from NILD Educational Therapy - Thank you to all of our therapists who just don't give up.

"In July of 2017, I began working with a 6th grade student on a trial basis. One of his greatest areas of challenge is visual perception/visual motor. As we started working through Rhythmic Writing, I could not believe how challenged he was in this area.

In the two years I've worked with him, I noticed that when he did the motifs on the board, he was just "saying words;" they had no meaning to him. As often as I tried, and in as many words as I used, to explain that "over, back, around" described where his hand was and what it was doing, he didn't see it. I tried to get him to see that the words needed to match what his hand was doing. This fall, I decided to attack this, head-on, and see if he could get it.

I tried explaining in different ways how the words matched the movement. Finally, I told him to say "over" and drop his arm; say "back" and drop his arm; say "around" and drop his arm. That's what it took for him to "see" the connection. Suddenly, he could do it. He caught his own mistakes and verbalized them to me.

I asked him if Rhythmic Writing made more sense to him now. With a light of understanding in his eyes, and a smile on his face, he said, 'YES!' I followed it up with, 'How frustrating will it be for you to go through these motif cards now? His answer, It won't be frustrating at all!'

At the end of last year, this student's father told me that in the 5 years before coming here, they tried many different types of tutoring, schools (public, private, and home) and therapy to help their son. He estimated that in those 5 years they easily spent $100,000. In each place, they heard the same thing: we're not sure what to do. NILD Educational Therapy is the only thing that has had such a dramatic and lasting impact on his ability to learn."

Teachers Still Believe in 'Learning Styles' and Other Myths About Cognition

This is why I’ve chosen to work with NILD and Equipping Minds. Research based. Actually- current research.

Teachers Still Believe in 'Learning Styles' and Other Myths About Cognition Most teachers believe in learning styles and the concept of being right-brained versus left-brained, which have both been debunked by research, a new survey found.
