Congratulations to our July Athlete of the Month, Emelia Bogardus! An inspiring teen athlete that consistently attends 5:30am class. You’re one of a kind, Emelia!🤩

1. How long have you been doing CrossFit and how did you get started?

I did KidFit when I was really little 2 locations ago, and then did KidFit again in 6th grade. Since I was almost a teen, KidFit didn't really do it for me anymore, so I just kinda stopped going. I picked up CrossFit adult classes at the very beginning of 8th grade after I got appendicitis and became really weak. I wanted to be strong again, and I was willing to work for it.

2) Not many teens would consistently show up to a 5:30 AM class. How do you stay motivated?
So, l actually love the 5:30am class (shout out to Charles, Heather, Yaa, Ryan, and some other awesome people,) and wish I had the willpower to do it during summer, but I need my sleep as someone who will be waking up early next year too. I stayed motivated by the fact that if I4ww4 don't get up, no progress will happen. Consistency is key. Also, I like saying that I wake up at 5 every morning so some people at school would stop complaining that they woke up at 6.

3. What's your proudest moment or accomplishment since starting CrossFit?

I'm proud of all the progress I've made over not that much time. I've gotten so much stronger, and I feel better too. I'm pretty proud of my 145 lb. back squat. I'm really grateful to my Dad for taking me in the mornings and to my Mom for taking me now so I can have these achievements.

4. If you could program a WOD named "Emelia", what would the movements be?

If there was a WOD named Emelia, it'd probably have some power cleans, some V ups, probably some rowing too. I wouldn't say I really enjoy these movements, just hate them the least. They're not bad though. I'd definitely choose them specifically over many other movements.

5. Outside of CrossFit, what are some of your hobbies or talents?

Outside of CrossFit, I love singing and am actually really good at it. I also enjoy drawing and reading. I'm currently learning ukelele, but I can't say l'm a prodigy. I enjoy hanging out and playing games with my family and dog as well.

Help us celebrate our May Athlete of the Month, Marylinda Cohron!! đź©·
Marylinda Cohron

She’s the kind of person whose friendly energy and bright soul light up any room. Her positivity is contagious, and her presence makes every class much better. She is consistent in her workouts and has been with us for over 10 years! We’re lucky to have her as part of the Silverback family!

1) How did you find CrossFit Silverback and what led you to join?
My neighbor, The Rinkles, told me they were doing an intro class and l asked to tag along. I thought for sure after the month of intros I would not return but seeing the comradery among the athletes and support as a beginner I received, I just had to keep going.

2) What keeps you motivated in your CrossFit journey even on the tough days?

At first it was seeing my mother’s daily struggles and not wanting to have her health issues. After her passing I had to ask myself this exact question again, you feel lost when you lose your last parent. I would say seeing the strength I have built and the pride/support my kids and husband have for me.

3) What’s one thing you’ve accomplished at CrossFit Silverback that you never thought you would?
There are so many things.... Sit ups, push-ups, I actually can flip on the wall now (lol) a big fear of mine. But I think the biggest is the amount of weight I can lift and it keeps growing.

4) Is there a motto, phrase or piece of advice you try to live by either inside or outside the gym?

Just make it inside the door. And don’t cheat yourself.

5) Outside of CrossFit, what are some of your favorite hobbies, talents or skills?

I enjoy 5K’s, Biking, small hikes, reading and most of all spending time with my family. As far as talent and skill, I have been told that I am good with talking to strangers and making them feel welcomed and included.

Last week, Coach Marianne and members Judi & Isabel had the opportunity to lead a fun workout class at Bridging for Tomorrow for their ESL students! They shared simple, effective exercises they can do at home—and they’re excited to head back again next week!

Congratulations to our April Athlete of the Month, Samantha Bryant! We are so proud of you! 🥳🤩

1. What do you enjoy most about being a member at CrossFit Silverback?
I like how the workout is different every day, and I like the coaches making sure people have correct form, and that each workout is adjustable for skill level.

2. How did you find CrossFit Silverback?
John (husband) found CFSB when we decided we needed to join a gym, I would have never looked at a CrossFit gym.

3. What was your first workout at CFSB? How did you feel after?
I think the first workout had snatches, and it was
terrible and I thought I would never come back.....but I did appreciate how the coach actually “coached” me, and made sure that my form was somewhat correct and had me adjust some things. I have a long history of ballet and proper form is EVERYTHNG…..we tried out two other gyms, and basically there was no reason for them to even have a coach because they did not help with anything, so ultimately we came back to Silverback, instead of just watching video workouts in our garage.

4. What is your favorite WOD or lift?
I like deadlifts, rowing, maybe some lunges

5. What motivates you? How has CrossFit changed you?
I am getting stronger compared to when I started, and I feel like my endurance for cardio is increasing, so definitely notice some changes happening.

6. What is something we might be surprised to know about you?
I usually try to add a little adventure excursion when
we take a family vacation. I have completed a Via Ferrata (absolutely terrifying), I have been ice climbing (with crampons and ropes and a weird creepy guide), and now my kids joke that they have a near death experience every time I plan something. (last trip was white water rafting with a 15 foot drop where we all totally fell out of the raft).
