Happy Diwali!

Diwali is celebrated across faiths by more than a billion people in the world’s most populous nation and the diaspora. Over five days, people take part in festive gatherings, fireworks display, feasts and prayer.
Diwali is derived from the word “Deepavali,” which means “a row of lights.” Celebrants light rows of traditional clay oil lamps outside their homes to symbolize the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

These simple activities isolate single skills children will later need, in combination, for more complex processes. One principle behind the activities Montessori designed was that “control of error” be evident.

Children need to learn how to wash their faces and hands, cut and care for their nails, brush their teeth, blow their noses, comb, braid, and brush their hair. Each activity is taught to the child step by step in a simple, direct fashion as an adult would perform the job in their own home.

Fine motor skills are so crucial for the child to learn to write. Maria Montessori also pointed out that the development of fine motor is directly connected to the development of the brain. Many fine motor activities are practical and represent work that is usually done in real life.

Dr. Montessori believed that the outdoor environment is a natural extension of the classroom. In our outdoor environments, children are able to build on their classroom knowledge through the sensorial experiences of nature and through constant contact with the seasons and the natural world.
