"To be a superhero, it does not always have to be a grand gesture. Sometimes it's the little things that make a person great."

These are the words spoken to Eldorado Elementary's fourth-graders on Wednesday morning by the author of "Eddie and Fred: We're All Heroes". Ms. Andrea Perez read the book that she authored with her sister Diana Reynolds, and then answered questions from the students. It was published in April 2021, and helps to address children's social-emotional needs.

The children loved the book! When Ms. Perez announced that they were planning on turning it into a series, there was a collective "whoop" that rang out across the school.

'Tis the Season for Gingerbread Houses, Elves and Ugly Sweaters!

The Gingerbread House making contest at Chestnut Ridge Middle School was a big hit! Library Media Specialist Ms. Mendez challenged students to craft their own unique houses from paper or cardboard using the same diagram. It's going to be quite difficult for the judges to pick a winner, because they are ALL so creative and original.

Meanwhile, the Chestnut Ridge Administrative Elves are busy stuffing treat bags to give to the students before they head home "for a long winter's nap". Just one more day till #WinterBreak21 (No School from December 24 through January 2nd. Students return January 3rd.)

New York cancels January Regents exams due to COVID-19 pandemic
A Hometown Hero!

When Grandview Elementary School Principal Smith noticed thick, black smoke rising from the Yeshiva of Spring Valley Girls School across the street on Monday afternoon, she went straight to her custodian Kevin Holland, because she knew he would know just what to do.

She was right. While the office staff called in the emergency to the local police, Kevin sprinted across the street to help evacuate the building and usher the girls to safety at Grandview. This wasn’t Kevin’s first rodeo - he is the Fire Chief in his hometown of Circleville, New York, in Orange County.

“I was so impressed with Kevin’s immediate impulse to spring into action and help the students to safety,” said Principal Smith. “I am grateful he was here to help us through this ordeal.”

As the firefighters put out the blaze, Grandview served as a warming station for the students and staff until they moved to another site.

“This is one of the marvelous things about the teachers and staff across the East Ramapo Central School District community - the natural instinct to do good,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Clarence Ellis. “We recognize Mr. Holland for his bravery and compassionate intuition and Principal Smith for her strong leadership.”

On Tuesday morning, district employees from the Yeshiva showed their appreciation for the assistance they received by presenting a “Thank You” poster to Principal Smith and staff, which was created and decorated by the students of the school. Throughout the day on Tuesday, Ms. Smith and her team received numerous other tokens of appreciation from the school representatives, including flowers and heartfelt words from the students.

Kakiat and ECC have a special connection, besides being located in the same building! Kakiat 7th graders have been visiting ECC 1st graders during their lunch break, introducing them to early robotics and connecting with the younger students. These regular visits have been a great way to build positive ongoing relationships in the school community, while addressing their social-emotional needs as well. The big kids feel important, and the little kids feel special - a win-win!

New York cancels January Regents exams due to COVID-19 pandemic

The January 2022 administration of the High School Regents Examination Program is cancelled due to the ongoing COVID–19 pandemic, State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced today. This cancellation applies to all Regents Examinations that had been scheduled for the January 2022 Regents Examination period. No decisions have been made regarding the June and August 2022 administrations of Regents Examinations or any other State assessment programs. https://bit.ly/33PDIM7

“Educators, school staff, communities, and families have taken painstaking efforts to ensure a safe and healthy school year," Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. said. "Given the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, the recent acceleration in COVID-19 infections, and continuing upheaval the virus has caused in schools across the state, this decision is the right one. New York's students will continue to have access to high-quality coursework while allowing districts to prioritize the health and safety of our school communities."

"New York set a daunting record last week with more COVID-19 cases reported in one day than ever before," Commissioner Rosa said. "Once again, the January Regents Exams cannot be safely, equitably, and fairly administered across the state. We will continue to work with our schools, districts, and stakeholders to ensure they have what they need to provide academic, social and emotional, and mental health supports for our students."

Why does it rain? How do clouds form?

Inquisitive Kakiat 4th grade scientists were able to see these explanations come to life when they participated in a virtual water education program led by SUEZ Water New York - our local water company! In this interactive program, scholars learned about the water cycle and created a “Water Cycle in a Bag.” Labeling each step on the outside of the bag, they recreated the process of the water cycle, and then proudly displayed their creations on the classroom window.

All week, they observed the water cycle in action on the windows. The water in the bag is heated up against the sunny window. That water turns into a gas (the process of evaporation). Then, after sticking to the sides of the bag, the evaporated water has no place to go, so the condensed water slides back into the pool of water like rain.

In Mr. Melo's Bilingual History Class, students are learning about Imperialism. First, they read about Britain's role in India in the 19th century and explored the implications of British racism, the salt tax, and the British education system. Then, these Ramapo High School scholars learned about Belgian's King Leopold, and the atrocities that took place under his administration in the Congo Free State. This week, they put King Leopold on trial, along with Leopold's men, and the people of the Congo, and debated who and what was responsible for the large-scale mistreatment of the indigenous peoples. The conclusion: While King Leopold was certainly abhorrent, the entire system was to blame for the brutal regime that resulted in the death of 10 million people from Congo Free State.

They are not R2D2, but these robots sure are cute!

To foster Fleetwood students' knowledge of robotics and automation, Library Media Specialist Ms. Simpson Luna brought out the bots. The children drew robots, and then helped to build and program them. It is a very effective and hands-on STEAM learning experience and develops programming skills even at this early age. What's more, they absolutely LOVE it. Just listen to their screeching and see the looks on their faces!

Decisions, Decisions.

It's independent working time in Ms. Robin Lubatkin's class and these 3rd graders were able to choose between writing in their journal, engaging in grammar work or reading a book. Meanwhile, other students worked closely with the teacher answering questions about the text they just read, and finding evidence in the text to support the responses. Just another productive day of instruction at Fleetwood!

"You say the price of my love's not a price that you're willing to pay. You cry in your tea which you hurl in the sea when you see me go by."

When Mr. Michael Collins listened to the King sing "You'll Be Back" in the musical Hamilton, he knew it would be the perfect fit for his History unit on the American Revolution. So, Chestnut Ridge seventh-graders viewed the scene and then picked apart the lyrics one line at a time, discussing the connections to the history lesson, including the Boston Tea Party and the rising tensions between Britain and the Continental Army.

"The kids really seemed to get a lot out of the lesson, and I think the song gave them a deeper understanding into what was happening, at that time," said Mr. Collins. "Seeing the actor portray King George III spitting mad really demonstrated how furious he was at the American colonies. It's memorable."

Thank you, Hamilton Lin-Manuel Miranda for writing this masterpiece, Jonathon Groff for this unforgettable performance, and most of all to Mr. Collins for enlightening these #EastRamapo students' minds.
