The SAR Field Team Leader Course is designed for experienced search and rescue responders who are ready to take on a greater leadership role during wilderness search operations. This course focuses on the practical skills needed to safely and effectively lead a field team in challenging terrain, changing weather, and high-stress environments.

Students will explore field leadership, team safety, search assignments, communications, navigation, clue awareness, documentation, risk management, briefing and debriefing, and decision-making during active search operations. Emphasis is placed on leading small teams, maintaining accountability, adapting to changing field conditions, and providing useful information back to incident command.

This course is ideal for SAR team members, public safety personnel, EMS providers, fire service members, and wilderness responders who want to build confidence as field leaders. Through practical discussion and scenario-based learning, participants will gain tools they can immediately apply during training and real-world missions.

By the end of the course, students will be better prepared to lead with confidence, protect their team, complete assigned objectives, and support safer, more effective wilderness SAR operations.

This course provides an overview of the recognition, assessment, and management of common altitude-related illnesses, including Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), and High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). Students will explore risk factors, signs and symptoms, prevention strategies, field treatment priorities, and evacuation considerations.

Altitude illness is not just a mountaineering problem. It can affect hikers, skiers, hunters, wilderness responders, wildland firefighters, aviation personnel, recreational travelers, and anyone rapidly traveling to higher elevations. With increased access to high-altitude destinations, these emergencies are more common than many providers realize. Be prepared to recognize altitude illness before a routine trip becomes a serious medical emergency.
