THE JOURNEY OF THE PEACEFUL WARRIOR 🥋✊🏿
This weekend, I had the honor and blessing of attending the Peaceful Warriors Seminar in Maryland, hosted by Grandmaster Samuel Scott.
What made this experience especially meaningful was being surrounded by so many Black martial artists whose names, teachings, accomplishments, and journeys I have encountered online and read about over the years. To finally meet many of these brothers and sisters in person was powerful.
It reminded me that martial arts is much bigger than fighting.
It is history.
It is culture.
It is discipline.
It is community.
It is self-knowledge.
And ultimately, it is responsibility.
My own martial arts journey began in Africa, under the guidance of Grandmaster Francis Fuster—a martial artist, musician, teacher, and cultural ambassador who has spent years promoting the principles and values of the warrior throughout the West Coast of Africa.
Those early teachings helped shape my understanding that the true warrior is not defined by how much destruction they can create, but by how much discipline, courage, wisdom, restraint, and humanity they can cultivate.
The Peaceful Warriors gathering brought that understanding full circle for me.
From Africa to America.
From teacher to student.
From generation to generation.
From the physical practice of martial arts to the deeper practice of becoming human.
There is something powerful happening when Black martial artists come together—not simply to demonstrate technique, but to remember, reconnect, teach, learn, and build upon the legacy that came before us.
We have inherited more than fighting systems.
We have inherited knowledge.
And with knowledge comes responsibility.
The question becomes:
What will we do with what has been given to us?
Will we use our strength to dominate—or to protect?
Will we use our knowledge to elevate ourselves—or to elevate others?
Will we compete only to prove who is better—or connect so that we all become better?
The peaceful warrior understands that strength without wisdom can become destruction, while strength guided by consciousness can become service.
I am grateful to Grandmaster Samuel Scott for creating the space for this gathering, and grateful to every martial artist, teacher, student, and warrior who continues to keep these traditions alive.
My journey continues.
Africa was the beginning.
The journey continues through community.
And the responsibility is to leave something worthy for the next generation.
🥋✊🏿🌍
Be strong.
Be disciplined.
Be compassionate.
Know yourself.
Protect life.
Pass the knowledge forward.
