Our Mercy Day celebration began with a joyful and lively liturgy with Father Mike Speziale of St. Ephrem Parish, whose sports analogies—and great sense of humor—struck a chord with our students!
Father Mike reminded us that being part of a community is a lot like being part of a team: no one player can do it all alone. He even shared the story of a White Sox “Pope Hat” giveaway, when an entire stadium paused to offer one another a sign of peace—with 1st grader Topher happily modeling the hat for us!
But the heart of Father Mike’s message was beautifully simple: “Mercy is ‘I actually care.’” Being Rooted in Mercy means we are all in this together, bound together and growing, just like the roots in our Mercy Day logo. Mercy is found in the way we treat one another at recess, in the cafeteria, outside of school, and everywhere we go, with compassion, respect, and genuine care.
The liturgy was also a special opportunity to recognize student leadership, as we formally inducted the newest members of our Student Council and National Junior Honor Society. Their commitment to leading and serving others is another wonderful example of Mercy in action.
The perfect message for Mercy Day, and for what we strive to instill in our students every day.
