Building understanding in math to help students gain confidence, understanding, and continue to love math is one of my favorite things!

These kids are learning mental math strategies, one to one correspondence, multiplication, and friends of 10!

I LOVE games with many uses and this is definitely one of those games!

The goal of the game is to find "friends of 10" numbers as you collectively flip over the different chips.

You can easily adapt this game to have your child:
🔎 Find certain numbers that you are working on (like finding the number 4)
🔎 Practice ordering numbers from 1-9
🔎 Focus on adding to make a different number other than 10
🔎 Work on "one more" or "one less"
🔎 Work on "two more" or "two less"

There are so many ways you can use this game to meet where your child is at an what they are working on!

It also makes a great gift too!

Here's a link to grab the game if you're interested!

It’s always so wonderful to get together with other amazing innovative educators to connect, learn, support, and be inspired by one another! This weekend, I had the amazing opportunity to join together with some really amazing people - some I’ve met before and some I met for the first time! God is so good and I am so thankful for this path to reimagine learning, education, and growth for children, families, and myself too!

I’m absolutely thrilled to be on this amazing movement and I’m excited for all that lies ahead!!

Thank you so much to National Microschooling Center for making this possible!! Thank you for all you do to support us in the work we do!!!!

Also a shoutout to Lone Rock Retreat for an absolutely outstanding and incredible location to gather!!

I’m thinking of bringing some of these amazing designs and details to our Rooted Life space!! The hard part is going to be deciding which ones!!! 🤔

These kids are OUT OF THIS WORLD amazing!!

They have been learning SO much about space! I love that they are learning so much about text features and how to research too! They’ve been enjoying sharing interesting facts with each other too!!

How adorable are these kiddos playing chess and mancala?

I love that they choose to play these games together! We love games for building so many skills including communication and cooperation.

One of the many things I LOVE about multiage learning is the opportunity children of different ages have to work together and help one another!

Whether it’s reading, practicing high frequency words, building math skills, teaching each other about new concepts or learned facts, or something in between, it’s absolutely powerful to have kids interacting with others of different ages!

It’s not just the older kids helping the younger kids. The younger kids have been helping the older kids just as much too!

I love that Rooted Life Academy gives kids this valuable opportunity!!

❄️ If you have snow or are going to be getting snow, save this idea!! ❄️

Put out a little tray of bird feed outside in the snow (you can also throw the seed around too!). The birds will LOVE it and your kids will love seeing all the birds come to eat! It’s also fun to see the cute little bird tracks left behind too! 🐦

We studied birds last year so it’s been fun for my own children to identify the birds they see coming to eat!

This is especially great on the REALLY cold days that are TOO cold to be outside playing.

Let me know if you give this a try!

I absolutely love helping children build up their fluency with math concepts.

While some kids are working on personal math facts, other kids are working on building numbers to 100 using tens and ones, and other kids are building numbers 0-10 with blocks!

Photos from Rooted Life Academy's post 01/04/2024

We are hard at work each day! Today some of our kids worked on “decomposing” numbers to understand the number relationships that make up each numbers. Other kids are worked on counting with one to one correspondence to 100!! Other kids worked on related facts with inverses of addition and subtraction for three digit numbers! And then those kids worked on representing multiplication using models to help them practice!

Today was GLOW DAY!!

It’s one of my absolute FAVORITE days of the year!

We had so much fun today!

🌋We started off playing with glow sticks, playing tic tac toe, and using glow islands to play Floor is Lava.

💡🌎We focused our devotional around Matthew 5:14. We did an art project with glow in the dark paint to represent lighting the world even in the darkness. We learned that Jesus’ light shines through us so that it can bring glory back to God.

🎳We went “glow bowling” to play a game that required the children to make up as many words as they could with the letters they collected from their bowling pins.

🔍We categorized words based on their spelling pattern.

✏️We found and traced ABCs.

🎳We went “glow bowling” again, this time to collect number cards that we then put in number order from least to greatest.

🕵🏻‍♀️We analyzed fact families to find which numbers sentence didn’t belong with the others.

✏️We traced numbers and made tens frames to match the given number using stickers.

We played, we laughed, we made memories.

Merry Christmas! We hope everyone is having a wonderful time celebrating with family and friends!

That's a Wrap! 12/21/2023

We absolutely LOVED getting to be a part of this event with KindCraft!

This post is such a great read to find out more about this project and even about how Kind Craft got started! I loved reading about how the student ambassadors have gotten the chance to develop leadership skills through working with this project over the years!

I love that there are opportunities like this for kids to get involved and help our communities in hands on ways!

Kind Craft has other service opportunities throughout the year. There is a great variety of opportunities. You can check out their page or check their website:

That's a Wrap! We wrapped up our month long blanket service project this week. It's hard to believe this was our 9th year making blankets for others. As many of you know, making no sew fleece blankets was the project that led to KindCraft. Here we are pictured below, December 2015, making blankets alongside neighb...

We’ve been learning all about Christmas being Jesus’ birthday! I love that the children are learning the story and are able to even recall so many details as we’ve been learning!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

We cannot wait to write back!

We absolutely LOVED partnering with KindCraft with their No Sew Blanket Project for Mission Southside!

We made 5 blankets together and learned so much through the process: teamwork, scissor safety, measuring, patience, how fabric is designed (salvage edges, how to tell the nice side, how fabric stretches, etc.), perseverance, problem solving, and success! The kids even worked on fine motor skills and hand muscles through tying off each fringe! The older children helped guide the younger children as the younger children learned quickly and were able to do things on their own from there!

We are over joyed that we had the chance to participate in this project! I’m so thankful for opportunities that make it possible for children to contribute to our community in hands on, authentic, meaningful, and memorable ways. Thank you KindCraft!!!

Today we started our first blanket for KindCraft’s No Sew Fleece Blanket Service Project! This is our first blanket out of the 5 we will complete. These blankets will be donated to Mission Southside!

We are so excited to participate in this project. Having a group of mixed age students allows for the older and younger kids to work together in really successful ways! They worked together to use fabric scissors to cut one inch strips of fringe for the blankets. Then they looped the fringe pieces through small slots to tie the blanket together. They did absolutely amazing!!

We are so thrilled to be a part of this project! I lost count of how many times I heard “this is so fun!!” and “I love doing this!” ❤️❤️❤️❤️

We are SO excited to get to participate with KindCraft for this service project! This is such an awesome opportunity to be involved with supporting our local communities!

We are thrilled to announce that the following schools will have students participating in our No Sew Fleece Blankets Service Project this year.

Thanks to your generous community donations, we were able to purchase over 100 fleece kits for students to participate. We are often asked by schools for ways they can involve their students in giving back. We were thrilled to be able to provide some blankets for so many applicants.

Love that we have leaders in our schools who want to give back to the community. Thank you to Becky McNichols, Charley Murphy, Dara Tyler, Jennifer Mulholland, Kim Russell, Mark Shreve, Molly Kennedy, Nicole Miller, Paula Athey, Lauren Gore and Jan Kelly for seeking out ways for your students to be involved in community service.

These blankets will be donated to Mission Southside as part of their Christmas Store.

Yesterday as part of our Thanksgiving Celebration at Rooted Life Academy, we did a “Balloons Over Broadway” project! This past week we read the book “Balloons Over Broadway” which tells about the history behind the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The book was absolutely AMAZING! We learned so much about how Tony Sarg was instrumental in how the parade started, what problems arose, and how Tony worked to solve those problems!

We made our own “parade balloons,” learned how green screens work, and put together our own parade “in” the streets of New York City! Then we performed the same parade a little closer to home in front of Union Station!!

This whole thing was such an awesome project!

We started diving into our space inquiry project yesterday and it has been awesome!

The students each have a space related question or topic that they chose. They are working on collecting information, drawing pictures, and making connections based on what they are finding.

When it was time to clean up today, they all BEGGED for more time to keep working and learning. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Playing with play dough is such a great way to help build hand muscles. We used play dough today to make snakes and roll balls during our phonics session. Then we used it to build high frequency words we are working on.

We LOVE gameschooling!

One of my absolute favorite things to do is add games into our learning to help practice and strengthen skills!

What are your favorite games to play with your child? We’re always interested in adding in new games!!

Photos from Rooted Life Academy's post 11/08/2023

We love Word Problem Wednesdays!

These word problems are decodable so the children can read them themselves! Then they do a number sentence, represent the problem in a tens frame, and then draw a quick pic to match!

We are SO excited to start learning about Space! We are kicking off our unit by exploring all of our space books. From here, we’ll start asking questions about things we want to learn and find out. These interest questions will guide our learning and help us take a deep dive into all things space!

We want to know!!

Now that we are in the month of November, we'd love to know what your fondest school-related November memories are!
