So….

“When can my child move from decodable books to leveled readers?”

You know the ones; they’re high interest texts with great images and they get your child excited to read. I know you’re ready for them to be able to confidently pick up one of those and read it from beginning to end!

The answer to this questions isn’t based on a grade level or age. It’s based on whether they’ve built a strong enough decoding foundation.

According to reading specialists Michael Hunter and Linda Farrell, children should continue practicing with decodable texts until they can consistently:

✅ Read CVC words, blends, and digraphs accurately (including nonsense words).
✅ Read familiar one-, two-, and three-syllable words with confidence.
✅ Read words with silent e and r-controlled vowels accurately.
✅ Read around 50 high frequency words out of context.

At that point, leveled texts become a great way to apply their decoding skills in more natural, varied reading. Decodable texts teach the code. Leveled texts help students generalize the code. They each have an important purpose, but they’re not interchangeable.

One thing I encourage parents and teachers to remember: moving to leveled readers doesn’t mean you’re finished with decodable books. Many students continue to benefit from decodable reading practice while they begin reading leveled texts. The goal isn’t to rush the transition. It’s to build automatic, confident readers.

A strong reading foundation takes time, but it’s worth getting right the first time.

If you’ve ever wondered why your child is reading stories with me that seem so “simple,” there’s a good reason for it.

Decodable texts are designed to help children practice the phonics skills they’ve already been taught. Instead of asking kids to guess words from the pictures or memorize patterns, these stories give them the opportunity to apply what they know and build confidence one word at a time.

When a child can successfully sound out the words on the page, they’re strengthening the brain pathways needed for fluent, automatic reading. That’s how real reading growth happens.

Decodable stories aren’t meant to replace all books. They’re a tool we use within reading instruction for practice while children are learning to read. Once those foundational skills become automatic, they’ll be ready to enjoy a much wider variety of books. Please, please, please continue reading “real” books to your child every day! Yes, even when they’re “too old”!

Reading isn’t about guessing. It’s about building the skills that allow every child to become a confident reader.

I’ve been thinking a lot about why I created Skill Builders Studio.

It wasn’t because I thought homeschool parents needed more to do.

It was because I kept meeting amazing families who were doing everything they could for their children and still felt like they were carrying the weight of it all.

The lesson planning.
The teaching.
The appointments.
The laundry.
The meals.
The constant wondering…

“Am I doing enough?”

As both a teacher and a mom, I know that feeling.

Sometimes our kids don’t need another curriculum. They need someone to come alongside them with specialized instruction, fresh encouragement, and a new way of explaining a skill that just hasn’t clicked yet.

That’s exactly why Skill Builders Studio exists.

It’s a place where homeschool students can build confidence in reading and math while parents get a few hours to breathe, catch up on life, teach another child one-on-one, or simply sit in peace knowing their child is learning in a supportive environment.

Our small groups are intentionally designed for students who need a little extra support, including those with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences. Every activity is hands-on, engaging, and focused on helping children experience success.

I truly believe that struggling doesn’t have to mean falling behind.

Sometimes all it takes is the right instruction, the right environment, and someone who believes in your child as much as you do.

On Target Learning is seeking enthusiastic, dependable tutors who are passionate about helping students build confidence and succeed. Whether you’re a college student pursuing education, a current teacher looking for supplemental income, a homeschool mom, or a retired teacher who still enjoys working with students, we’d love to hear from you!

What You’ll Do

* Provide engaging one-on-one math and/or reading tutoring sessions both virtually and in person.
* Personalize instruction to meet each student’s individual learning needs.
* Foster confidence while helping students develop strong math and reading skills.
* Communicate student progress with families and the program director.
* Maintain a professional, positive, and encouraging learning environment.

Qualifications

* Strong understanding of elementary, middle school, and/or high school math and/or strong understanding and application skills with structured literacy.
* Previous tutoring, teaching, or experience working with children.
* Experience working with struggling learners, students with ADHD, dyslexia, or other learning challenges is preferred, but not required.
* Excellent communication and organizational skills.
* Reliable transportation for in-person sessions.
* Comfortable using technology for virtual instruction.

This position may be an excellent fit for:

* College students pursuing a degree in education or a related field.
* Current classroom teachers or homeschool parents looking for flexible supplemental income.
* Retired teachers who enjoy continuing to make a difference.
* Individuals who have a passion for helping children learn and grow.

Schedule & Student Assignments

* Flexible scheduling; you choose the days and times that fit your availability.
* Evening availability is required.
* Tutors work with students in Kindergarten through 12th grade, but you can choose the age, grade levels, and subject you feel most comfortable teaching.
* Opportunities to grow your caseload based on your availability and preferences.

Support You’ll Receive

While tutors are encouraged to bring their own expertise and teaching style, you won’t be on your own. Instructional materials, lesson-planning support, and collaboration are available whenever requested, allowing you to teach with confidence while maintaining flexibility in your approach.

When I created Skill Builders Studio, I wanted to create something different. A place where children who have struggled could finally feel safe enough to learn. This girl is one of the main reasons I wanted to create this very program.

This incredibly talented girl is a fifth grader who spent years believing school just wasn’t meant for her.

Every school day was filled with anxiety. Dyslexia and ADHD made learning feel overwhelming. The pressure to keep up, constant frustration, and repeated feelings of failure led to daily struggles with focus and frequent physical symptoms of anxiety. Learning had become associated with stress instead of curiosity.

Like so many bright children with learning differences, she doesn’t lack intelligence. She lacked an environment that matched the way she learns.

That’s exactly why Skill Builders Studio exists.

Here, students are given the time they need. They aren’t rushed, compared to others, or made to feel “behind.” Instead, they receive individualized support, evidence-based instruction, and a calm, low-stress environment where mistakes are simply part of learning.

The transformation has been incredible to witness. And when you’re family, that makes it hit even closer to home for me.

Instead of walking into each day overwhelmed, she is beginning to approach learning with confidence. She’s discovering that she is capable. She’s taking academic risks, celebrating progress, and building skills that once felt impossible.

The goal has never been perfection.

The goal is confidence.

Because when a child believes, “I can do hard things,” everything changes.

Every child deserves a place where they feel safe, understood, and empowered to learn at their own pace. Sometimes, changing the environment changes everything.

Calendar time is so much more than learning the days of the week!

During our early learning sessions at Skill Builders Studio, calendar time is filled with meaningful conversations, songs, movement, and hands-on activities that build the foundation for both reading and math.

During just a few minutes together, children are practicing:
📖 Letter and sound recognition
🗣️ Vocabulary and speaking skills
🔢 Counting and number sense
📊 Patterns and sequencing
📅 Understanding days, months, and time concepts
🔍 Critical thinking and prediction skills
🤝 Listening, taking turns, and participating in a group

These daily routines may look like simple fun, but they’re carefully designed to strengthen the early literacy and numeracy skills children need for future success.
