Our learners complete their core skills and project work during the school day, leaving evenings open for family time. Since the heroes are already managing real goals and responsibilities in the studio, their learning is designed to be completed at school rather than sent home as nightly homework.

Key Benefits of Loose Parts Play:
Cognitive Growth: Enhances problem-solving, spatial awareness, and creative thinking through trial and error.

Physical Skills: Strengthens fine motor control with small items like buttons or beads, and builds gross motor strength with large items like crates or logs.

Imagination: Sparks self-directed, creative role-play where children assign their own purpose to objects.

Social-Emotional Learning: Encourages collaboration, communication, sharing, and conflict resolution when playing with peers.

At Acton, every day brings a new adventure. New challenges to tackle, questions to explore, mistakes to learn from, and opportunities to discover what you’re capable of.

Because being a Hero isn’t about knowing exactly where the journey will take you. It’s about being brave enough to take the next step.

Acton is a little outside the box—and that’s intentional. Here are 5 things that make our learning environment different:

1. The Heroes Are in the Driver’s Seat
Learners take ownership of their goals, choices, and learning instead of simply being told what to do.

2. Guides Don’t Teach—They Guide
Instead of standing at the front of the room giving answers, Guides ask questions, facilitate discussions, and help Heroes find answers for themselves.

3.  Learning Happens Through Real Challenges
Heroes learn by doing! From business fairs and exhibitions to quests and real-world projects, learning goes beyond worksheets and textbooks.

4.  Disagreements Become Learning Opportunities
Heroes use contracts, peace tables, and discussions to work through conflicts and learn how to solve problems together.

5.  There’s More to Learning Than Academics
We care about the whole Hero—their character, independence, creativity, curiosity, and ability to take on challenges.

At Acton, we’re not trying to fit learning into the same box. We’re creating a space where Heroes can discover what they’re capable of.

Guides don’t teach the heroes how to solve every problem—they give them the space and tools to figure it out themselves.

So, how do our heroes handle disagreements? Through contracts, peace tables, and discussions, all led by the heroes.

When a disagreement comes up, heroes may hold each other accountable to the contract they created together or lead a peace table, where both sides have the opportunity to share their perspective and listen to the other.

We give our heroes the space to work through challenges themselves, so they can build the skills and confidence to become masters of problem solving.

Tuesday Tip: Apple Volcano
Add a drop of dish soap if you want a foamier eruption! The chemical eruption will produce more bubbles with the added dish soap and create more runoff too!

09/28/2026

Every day at Acton, our heroes take on new challenges that help bring out the unique character traits and passions that make them who they are—whether that’s leadership, creativity, curiosity, or something entirely their own.

“Earth and Sky, Woods and Fields, Lakes and Rivers, the Mountain and the Sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books.”
