Great event to show support for adult education in Virginia!!!

📣📣VAACE is gathering the interest of Adult Education practitioners, Literacy organizations/CBLOs, Correctional education programs, students, and partners that plan to attend the "Flood the Hill" event in Washington on Sept 16-17, during Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) Week. This event brings together adult educators, adult learners, and advocates from across the country to meet with Members of Congress to share how Adult Education transforms lives, our local and national communities, and the workforce.

CITIZENSHIP Preparation!!! There are 128 potential questions that citizenship applicants have to prepare for. They will be randomly asked 20 questions from the 128 potential questions. The following topics are covered.

Principles of American Democracy: The U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the separation of powers.
System of Government: The three branches of government (Legislative, Executive, and Judicial), checks and balances, and the roles of elected officials.
Rights and Responsibilities: Freedoms of expression, voting rights, and the duties of a U.S. citizen.
Colonial Period and Independence: The founding fathers, the Declaration of Independence, and major wars.
1800s to Present: The American Civil War, major conflicts, and key U.S. presidents.
American Symbols and Holidays: National monuments, the flag, and recognized holidays.
Geography and Native Peoples: Major U.S. rivers, state capitals, and recognized Native American tribes.

Adult Education classes will begin in September. The website www.rarae.org will be updated August 1 with details about how to sign up to get a registration appointment.

RARAE offers Adult Education Classes to include English Classes, Credential Classes, Workplace Skill Classes, and GED Preparation Classes in Caroline, Fredericksburg, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford.

Fun, FREE Community Event. This free, family music event is happening today, 6/15, 6/23 and 6/30 at 1401 Memorial Park, 11:30 am - 1 pm.

GEORGE WASHINGTON: Did you know that he spent much of his childhood in the Fredericksburg/Stafford area? His family moved to Ferry Farm in South Stafford when he was 6 years old. His father died when he was 11 years old and George took on many adult responsibilities. He became a surveyor and at the age of 21 entered military service for Virginia. He married Martha Washington in 1759. He became the Commander of the Continental Army at the age of 43 and became America's greatest military hero. He became the first president in 1789.

His mother, Mary Ball Washington, remained in Fredericksburg for the rest of her life. Her final home was on 1200 Charles St, which can be visited today. Tradition has it that George Washington visited her in Fredericksburg to receive her blessing before departing to become president.

She liked to go to meditation rock in present day Kenmore Park. There is a monument there dedicated to her. It is the first monument to honor a woman and was paid for entirely by other women. The monument resembles the one erected for George Washington in Washington D.C.

One of his sisters, Betty Washington Lewis, also lived in Fredericksburg at 1201 Washington Ave. The house was built in 1770 and is a good representation of wealth and social standing in colonial Virginia.
