This piano is one that I grew up playing on. Regional competitions, recitals, concerts, chapels, etc.

Never did I think that years later, I would be able to tune the very same piano! The story these keys tell, from beginners plucking “Hot Cross Buns,” to advanced pianists playing Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” Mvmt 3 (my personal favorite😉)- tuning this piano is always special to me. Hopefully with regular tuning, this piano will be around for a long time still!

I get asked this question a lot - “what age do you start giving lessons?”

My answer - “as early as possible!”

Ok, so maybe 1 is a little too young (here’s a picture of my son who just turned one and got his first “piano”… we’re still working on the lessons 🥴). However, I have seen kids as young as 4 years old excel and be excited to learn piano. After all, kids soak things up like a sponge!

I tell all my parents with young kids that whether their child will be able to handle lessons depends completely on the kid. Some are able to sit still for 30 minutes and can focus well. Others may need a year or two.

And that’s totally ok!

Every child is different and unique! For my extremely young students, I give them a bit of a trial period to see how they do. If they’re able to handle it, we continue. Otherwise, we hold off and see how next year goes.

It’s so exciting to see young kids learn to love playing piano! I was one of the young kids that began taking lessons at 5 years old. There was only one teacher who was willing to take me at such a young age, and I’m so glad she did because from there, my love for piano and music began! Now, I get to do the same for other kids, which is extra special to me!

Tuning #2

Check out the difference in pitch from tuning #1 to now! After two pitch raises, it is finally registering the correct notes. This was exactly two weeks after the first pitch raise.

Trust👏🏻the👏🏻 process👏🏻!

The next pitch raise will happen in 3 months. This is to continue to stretch the strings since they were so flat for so many years. You can already tell a huge difference in the tone of the piano and I was impressed with how well it held the tune after the first pitch raise!

Tuning #1

This piano had not been tuned in years and needed a whole lotta love. This is the piano before any tunings. It sounds extremely dull and flat. I knew it needed a pitch raise and would need continual pitch raises to help it hold a tune.

Have a flat piano? Let me help you fix that!

I’ve had a few pianos recently who have been so flat, they have needed a “pitch raise” or “pitch correction.” When a piano has been left in poor conditions and/or hasn’t been tuned in years, the piano will most likely go flat by 20-30 cents or more! In fact, just this last weekend, I worked on a piano that was so flat, my tuner recognized it as a note below the actual key (I played a”G” but the tuner registered an “F”).

In cases like this, it takes more than just a regular tuning job to get your piano back to its original glory. There is a series of multiple tunings in your future if a pitch raise is required- and there is a greater chance of strings breaking under the tension as well! A pitch raise can become costly with as many as 4 tunings needed within a year to finally get it back in tune!

This is why it’s so important to get your piano tuned regularly. You will prolong the life of your instrument and save yourself the headache of having to pay to replace strings and parts of your piano action!
