Battle by the Lake - April 11, 2026 04/13/2026

Three competitors made Spokane Judo proud on Saturday!
In his first tournament ever, Emeth distinguished himself by fighting better and better each subsequent match. He tried multiple standing and ground techniques ~ way to go Emeth!
Syd has really come a long way in her development as a tournament fighter ~ she also demonstrated multiple techniques, scoring a wazaari in one of her matches! She brought home bronze in both brackets!!
Buck's first tournament was in a crowded *advanced* division ~ there were no fighters for him in the novice division. Based on his fighting spirit and his use of multiple techniques, Sensei Brett feels he would have placed in a bracket with others who had his level of experience. He initiated multiple attacks, and worked hard to get out of a pin the entire time - not easy!
This primes us all for the Inland Empire tournament here in Spokane in 6 weeks - we'll be ready!
So grateful to our friends at Lakeland Judo for organizing the whole event and for all the support of Pacific Judo Academy as well!

Tomorrow is the day. Hopefully everyone can come out and support the people competing. Below I are a few reminders about the tournament. Please read them, particularly if you are competing.
- The link for the tournament info is here.
- Opening Ceremony is at 8:45 am. Please plan on arriving at 8 am.
- Smoothcomp will have a time for your matches. These are not accurate and they update continuously. Arrive at least 2 hours early for your matches.
- Make sure your gi is clean and fingernails are cut.
- Please wear slides or flip flops when you are not on the mat.
- Girls must have a plain white crew neck t-shirt under their gi. Hair must be pulled back and above the shoulder and no metal on/in the hair ties. No jewelry of any kind. I suggest everyone wear shorts under their gi pants.
- Make sure you bring snacks and water in case isn't food available
- Parents please talk to your kids about sportsmanship. It is not about winning, it is about going out there and doing your best. I know it doesn’t
feel good to lose, but they need to keep their cool on the mat; they can be mad or sad after they step off.
See everyone there

Promotions are always my favorite part of the year in judo. We get to see the progress everyone has made and recognize that progress.
It's often easy to forget how much we've learned over the year and it's nice to have a marker of how far we've come. That's really what the promotion represents.
My hope is that this is just another step on your road to a long career in Judo. There's always so much to learn and more skills to master.
