In all the years I’ve been a family childcare provider I’ve had the same conversation come up over and over again.

What do we call ourselves?

A daycare? A childcare? A preschool?

Or the dreaded “B” word.

Babysitter.

There’s a stigma attached to home providers and sometimes we’re not taken seriously.

Sometimes we ARE considered by a few as “just babysitters.”

Would we be taken more seriously if we attach the word “School” to the end of our name?

I’ve never been comfortable with calling myself a school, and I’ll tell you why.

I’m not a school.

I’m everything that should happen before “school” should even begin.

I’m rolling down grassy hills and blowing on dandelions to make wishes.

I’m snuggling under a blanket reading a story.

I’m the silly song singer who cant hold a tune.

I'm princess dresses and superhero capes.

I'm playdough and clay scraped up off the floor.

I’m warm fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.

I’m bike riding, sleigh riding and tree climbing.

I’m peek-a-boo and hide-n-seek.

I'm finding lost mittens and tieing shoes.

I’m ring around the rosy and duck duck goose.

I’m worm digging, frog catching, and dirty toes.

I'm mud pies and sand castles.

I'm splashing in puddles and dancing in rain showers.

I’m soft quiet spaces and loud boisterous places.

I'm a painting left behind at the easel.

I’m nose wiping and boo boo kissing and hugs until momma returns.

I'm the keeper of ice packs and band aids galore.

I’m finger painting and water splashing and block tower building.

I’m baby rocking and holding when there are a million other things to do.

I’m big movement rough and tumble play for children who shouldn’t be made to sit still.

I’m big emotions and negotiations.

I’m freedom from inappropriate demands and expectations.

I’m finding the blessings in deficits and disorders.

I’m the safe space for your child while you work to care for your family.

I'm a shoulder to lean on for parents and families.

I'm the beginning of friendships and fostering of relationships.

I'm all the good mornings and I'll see you tomorrows.

I’m the up all night worrier researching how to do things better to meet your childs needs.

I’m a place for children to be loved and accepted for who they are and where they are TODAY not tomorrow.

I’m wonder and discovery.

I’m a place for childhood.

…and that’s good enough for me.
