After 29 years of extraordinary service, Dr. James Hunter (Professor of Teacher Education & MA/TESOL) has retired from Gonzaga University and been awarded emeritus status. We are profoundly grateful for his dedication and care, and we thank him for the lasting impact he’s made on our community.
Before he stepped into retirement, Dr. Hunter reflected on his experiences with a Q&A: https://bit.ly/3QpUQk0

PICCE Engaged Faculty Member of the Year Award 2026
Dr. Jonas Cox was recognized for his outstanding support of the International Rescue Committee and his impact on youth and education programs for refugee communities in Spokane. For years, he has welcomed Refugee 101 presentations into his Refugee and Immigrant Perspectives class, inspiring students to volunteer. This past year, the partnership expanded to place his students as youth tutors and mentors, roles that are often hard to fill.

Photos from Counselor Education's big day at Bozarth Mansion earlier this month! Our students completed their oral defenses, presenting their personal approach to counseling.
It was especially meaningful to be back at Bozarth because our students begin their journey there at orientation, so ending it in the same place feels poetic and full‑circle.
In the photos, Dr. Young is pictured with Kristin Rawlins, who is an alum of our program. Dr. Bennett is with Hannah Elias, an adjunct instructor and alum. And Dr. Brinser is with Val Kjack, who also serves as an adjunct instructor.
We’re so proud of the growth and heart each student has shown. What a beautiful milestone to celebrate!
