Dr. Richard Atkins (Boston College) will offer an engaging and inquisitive lecture on paradoxes and puzzles about knowledge based on his innovative introduction to philosophy textbook Puzzled?! (Hackett 2015). Dr. Atkins is known not only for his innovative research in epistemology, American philosophy, the history of philosophy, and logic, but also for his inviting spirit in philosophy which invites everyone to remember why they fell in love with deep questions in the first place.

Happy (Belated) Halloween from the GU Philosophy Department! Professor Braune wins the year for most creative costume. From Dr. Braune: The costume depicts Lady Philosophy, from Boethius's sixth century classic book, The Consolation of Philosophy. Philosophy visits and consoles the unjustly imprisoned Boethius as he awaits his ex*****on at the hands of the Emperor Theodoric's men. Lady Philosophy's dress is torn and damaged, because Philosophy is always under attack. She wears a ladder symbolizing the educational curriculum Boethius advanced, beginning with the Trivium (Logic, Grammar, and Rhetoric) and Quadrivium (Arithmetic, Geometry, Astronomy, and Music), undertaken before the study of Philosophy. Philosophy's dress also has a Pi and a Theta, representing practical and theoretical knowledge. In her left hand she carries books, and her right, a queenly scepter.
