Our goal at the Skill Center is successful job placement or continuing education for all of our students. The Skill Center is based on the following Concepts:

• Positive Experiences and Expectations

• Interrelated Sequential Learning

• Competency Based Individualized Learning

• Personal, Continual Growth and Leadership Development

• Business and Industry Cooperation and Coordination

• Job Readiness

• Preparation to Continue Learning at a Post-Secondary Institution

One only needs to visit the Skill Center to see the commitment to high standard technical and professional training. Our instructors are industry professionals having years of experience before entering the teaching field. It is this added benefit of industry experience that makes the difference when a student enters the workforce or continues on at the post-secondary level. The programs are designed around local, state and national skills standards. Even if the student does not go directly into the industry, the workplace skills, such as communication, problem solving and punctuality are valuable lifetime tools. One of the major attractions of the Skill Center program is the connection to the student’s home high school. The Skill Center is an extension of their high school where they remain for three periods allowing them to make an important connection to friends, teachers and counselors. Students also benefit from the extensive connection instructors have with industry. Some students are placed in job shadows, internships and clinicals during the program. Students get to see firsthand how business and industry operate, and on many occasions our students have a leg up when it comes to applying for and getting a job. The Skill Center has a connection with colleges and technical schools that allows students to earn college credit at little or no cost while still in high school. Tech Prep programs are saving families money and time when the student moves into advanced training. 87% of the programs offered have a college credit option. So take a moment, look at the programs available to you, then talk to your parents and counselor. What you learn at the Skill Center may change and enhance your future.

We’re excited for the year ahead and for the next chapter of Culinary Arts at NEWTech!

We’ve restructured our culinary department to give students a more focused, industry-connected experience across three key areas:

Eric Cook — Hospitality and Restaurant Management
Leading students in hospitality, service, and the business side of the food and beverage industry.

Nick Lavrov — Savory Chef
Leading our savory culinary program and helping students build the technical skills, professionalism, and creativity needed in a commercial kitchen.

Sherane Prish — Pastry Chef
Leading our baking and pastry program, with a focus on professional baking techniques, pastry arts, and production.

We’re excited about what this team will bring to our students and the opportunities ahead as we continue building a culinary program that reflects the skills, expectations, and experiences of today’s hospitality industry.

Here’s to a great school year!

We are excited to welcome Amanda Peterson to the NEWTech Prep Skill Center community! Amanda joins us as our new Medical Assisting instructor and brings valuable experience, knowledge, and a passion for supporting students.

Amanda shared:

Hello! My name is Amanda Peterson, and I am excited to join the team at NEWTech as a Medical Assisting Instructor. I bring 15 years of experience as a clinical nurse, specializing in allergy and asthma care, and I am thrilled to combine my healthcare background with my lifelong passion for teaching.

Before stepping into this role, I spent time substitute teaching, which confirmed my love for working with students and helping them learn and grow. I believe education has the power to inspire confidence, build skills, and open doors to meaningful careers, and I am eager to share my healthcare experience with the next generation of medical professionals.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our two children, and our dog. In my free time, you’ll often find me running, crafting, camping, or enjoying the outdoors with my family.

I am passionate about helping students develop the knowledge, confidence, and compassion they need to succeed in the healthcare field. I am looking forward to continuing to grow the Medical Assisting program here at NEWTech and look forward to an amazing year of learning, growth, and success with my students!
