We all know that goal setting is a great way to achieve the results you want.

Sometimes though we just randomly create goals without really determining why we want to achieve them.

For example you may have a certain fitness challenge or race PB as a goal.

Why?
Because is sounds good?

Think about it and determine “why” you want to do it.

To improve your cardio health?
To challenge your limits?
To have fun and meet people?

A strong “why” will take you a long way.
It will keep you focused and motivated.
Create Goals that you have a good reason to Love ❤️.

Are your resolutions on hold?
Sometimes we just need to reboot our goals by taking a closer look at what is stalling us from taking action.
This begins with becoming aware of our thoughts and beliefs about our fitness goals.

We are so good at telling ourself lies about who we are and what we can do.
This that keeps us from actually taking action towards the things we really want in life.
Like running that 5 k, losing the 10 pounds or starting a daily walking routine.

Thoughts like…
It doesn't matter, I have no time, It won't work, I am too busy, something always happens, I am out of shape, I should do better, I am not an athlete, I hate exercise, it will be too hard....
I can go on and on.

Working with someone to help you see that background conversation will help you take charge of your mental game and regain your motivation to take action.

I had a conversation the other day where it was implied that older people may be “uncoachable” and another one where it was said that people in their “60”s are “set in their ways” and can not change.

This is such a pile of 💩.

Of course, this mindset is not surprising. After all, there is the saying
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”

That is a very common statement in our society.
I would like to challenge the truth of it though..Especially as it relates to older adults.

None of us are dogs at any age-
We are humans.
Humans who have the ability to continually grow and adapt to their environment-
Even after age 60 or 70…etc.

All of us humans have likes and habits that could be labeled as being
“set in our ways”.
Why? Because it works for us.
When it doesn’t work for us anymore ..
we change.

At any age, a person can be “set in their ways”.
Think of a child who has a set nap time, favorite meal or piece of clothing.
Just try to change them or coach them into something else!

My youngest daughter was set on wearing bright red cowboy boots for at least a year. For my son, it was the PB&J sandwich at almost every meal.

As time went on they both got “unset” and adapted to other options that worked better for them. You could actually say that growing older made them more adaptable.
After all, it is survival..adapt or perish.

Us older adults do not have to accept the lies about who we are and what we can or can’t do.
Ageism is real and out there.
The first step to combat this is to refuse to believe the lies that are said about us in our own minds and in our daily conversations.

There are things I Think I can do and those I Think I can’t.
It is time to challenge outdated, false limitations.

It is time to re-evaluate, upgrade and revise my possibilities.

It is time to NOT BELIEVE Myself ..
when my brain says
“I Can’t”
And instead BELIEVE IN Myself.

“Is that really True?” will be my new mantra.
Perhaps “????” is possible…will be my favorite question.

At this point, I have the negative internal chatter down, but I can always use more practice at the positive self-talk.

Mastery may be a stretch but it is something worth working towards
and a great 2022 focus.

This may seem easy..but is it?

Wouldn’t it be great to Love and accept who you are everyday regardless of your circumstance or performance?

I may not be perfect at this but
that is ok.
What is important is that I keep working towards this Goal-
Love Who I am
As I Am Now
And as I will be tomorrow.

Have you ever been on a roll with your fitness efforts and then
Something unexpected Happens?

This morning I woke up feeling very thankful because I was able to avoid a Mad car in the Walmart parking lot yesterday.
Thank you speed and agility training!
Because of you, I am a fit and feisty grandma.
Just try to run me down - you will see.

Lately, I have been on a good roll with my fitness and I feel great! Today a run was scheduled along with some strength training and yoga..
But,
For some reason, I decided to pause this morning to quickly reposition a shelf in my office.
It was just a small shelf, nothing that this agile old lady couldn’t handle.
Then something totally unexpected happened…
My back “Went Out”.
What? How can that happen!!
Yes, my back was like:
“see you later Teresa.
I’m done with you”
as in…
I literally had to Crawl down the stairs
one painful step at a time,
and then slowly try to pull my body from the floor and onto the couch…
Out.

In one second, I went from
“craftily agile” grandma to “creaky” old lady.
What a set back!

So here I sit, trying to think myself out of this.
My first urge is to Shame myself for getting injured in the first place.
What was I thinking?
Why didn’t I stretch this morning?
As if, somehow the injury gods will register my remorse and reverse the sentence.
Then my brain thinks about chocolate and how I deserve it, since after all, I am in pain. Sweets will help this for sure…
Where is that Halloween candy and
how do I get to it?

We do that don’t we? When things go wrong, we add to our suffering by beating ourselves up and then we do something unhealthy to make it even worse.
Rx- Shame and sweets.
Yup that will help!
But it does not have to be that way.
We can be compassionate with ourselves and the embrace process of healing.
That is also a step towards fitness.

If I could change anything, I would change how much time I have spent in the past shaming myself for not being as thin or fit as the person next to me. I am awesome just the way I am, thick or thin.

No matter what our shape or size, we live in wonderfully designed bodies. Don’t let body comparison distract you from celebrating the body you live in.
It is a gift and worth taking care of.

I have to admit sometimes I get anxious when I set exercise goals.
It is scary to think that I may fail.
This is especially true when I try to compare myself to other people. I don’t want to miss the mark and then decide something is wrong with me.
That feels icky.
So..
My brain will start offering me all sorts of reasons not to try or distract me with another priority.
It wants me to stay safe and in my comfort zone.

But the thing is, the most important thing we can do is take care of the Body we have.
Exercise and movement is a great way to do that.

It does not have to be scary.
Personal fitness is just that..Personal.
We get to decide what works best for us
according to who we are - mind, body and spirit.

I can help you sort out what that is and

own personal fitness and wellness.

Action that fits who you are and
where you are in life.
