Summer Music Face-Off!

Is your kid Team Pokemon or Team Mario? During summer school, your kids have had fun learning video game music during Music specials every day. Several grades have learned the Pokemon theme song, conducted a Super Mario Chrome Music Lab experiment, singing songs from both Pokemon and Super Mario, played games related to them, colored various characters from both worlds, and upper grades doing pixel art of their favorite characters.

We’ve had some incredible fun with these characters, so we held a face-off to see how many kids choose Team Mario or Team Pokemon! Students were welcome to dress up in Pokemon or Super Mario colors, including shirts, costumes, and/or accessories to show their love for their team and favorite characters! It was so fun to see how some of them went far with it!!

Music in the Parks 2023

Flight Bound Honor Choir, comprised of 3rd-5th grade students, did an AMAZING job yesterday, singing “Keep Your Lamps” and “Refuge” at Liberty High School in Kansas City.

We followed up with going to Worlds of Fun, where students had a blast riding all sorts of rides and having fun with family and friends.

At the Award Ceremony, we received our results: 1st Place 🥇 in the Elementary Choir category with an Excellent rating. And although I am so very proud of them for this award, I’m even more thrilled that out of 13 schools (elementary, middle school, and high school) represented that day, our students from Highlandville Elementary School were awarded the Esprit De Corps trophy for best organization, conduct, and excellence in behavior. 🏆 Our students were on their very best behavior 😇 and represented Spokane School District in the very best light.

Additionally, our Spokane Middle School Choir, under the direction of Haley Yonke, participated in the same contest where they received 1st Place with an Excellent Rating, and 1st Place Overall in the Middle School Choir category.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!! Our HES K-1 students had a festive musical night singing songs in Spanish, playing instruments (castanets, maracas, & tambourines), dancing, acting, and more. We even had taco ingredients jumping on stage during the kids’ favorite song, “Raining Tacos.” 🌧️🌮😆

Speaking of tacos, the Brockrito Taco Truck was parked outside to serve our community an array of delicious Mexican food! 🎵 Yum, yum, yum, yum, yummity yum 🎵

A memorable fiesta of sounds, lights, & sights that would not have been possible without the help of administrators, our technology department, fellow teachers, parents, & students. A huge thank you to all of those who helped and supported this beautiful, extravagant endeavor. 💚🤍❤️

Our first performance yesterday at the Jr. Ag Rusted Rubbish event with the SY22-23 Flight Bound Honor Choir! These students have had only 3 rehearsals, but we pulled together to work on 3 familiar songs to us: O Baba (Brazilian song), The Wellerman, and My Mother Told Me.

Flight Bound Honor Choir singing “Count On Me” by Bruno Mars at the Spokane Choral Concert last night. So proud of these students and their strong, yet sweet voices. We also loved having the ASL Club, directed by Stephanie Bingham, signing along with us.

We were followed by spectacular performances by Spokane’s Middle School Choir, HS Concert Choir, & the Chamber Choir, directed by Haley Yonke.

🎊 Happy New Year! 🎊

I ❤️ the 2nd semester in music class! It’s during this semester that I enjoy delving into our multicultural unit. Music is universal and diverse. I hope all the students will learn to appreciate the similarities and differences we share with our fellow human beings around the world.

Based on the input of several of our 5th graders, here are the countries that all K-5 students will be learning during these next four months:

2. Stick notation with X’s are STICK-ON-STICK above your head.
