We are incredibly grateful to Vietnam War veteran Wes Anderson for his support of the Northeast Youth Center. Wes thoughtfully provided flags for our kids to place at veterans' graves, giving them a meaningful way to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Thank you, Wes; your kindness and commitment mean so much to all of us.

Children from the Northeast Youth Center honored fallen veterans for the eighth consecutive year by placing American flags and pennies on graves at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A penny left on a veteran's headstone signifies that someone visited and paid their respects to the deceased soldier.

The Northeast Youth Center's commitment to this tradition spans nearly a decade, creating lasting memories for participating children while ensuring veterans receive recognition.

Each year, new groups of preschoolers learn about honoring military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Friday morning tribute served as a reminder that honoring veterans transcends age and that teaching respect for military service can begin at the earliest stages of education.

SPOKANE, Wash. — As Memorial Day weekend begins, children from Northeast Youth Center found a meaningful way to honor America’s veterans—by visiting Fairmount Memorial Park and paying tribute at the graves of those who served.

The kids walked through rows of headstones, pausing at each veteran’s grave. The children read names aloud, shared birth and death dates, and placed small American flags and pennies on the markers.

Saying each name was a way to ensure that veterans' sacrifices are not forgotten. The tradition of leaving a penny on a grave carries special meaning, too. It’s a quiet signal that someone visited and remembered.

Before Memorial Day, the kids from Northeast Youth Center will be honoring fallen veterans. Friday, May 22, 9:30 am, children from Northeast Youth Center will be placing American Flags and pennies on veterans' graves at Fairmount Memorial Park, 5200 W. Wellesley. Why pennies? A penny on a headstone lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped, visited & paid respects.

Thank you, Wes Anderson, VFW Post 51, and Ace Hardware for donating 100 American flags.
