Mead Cooperative School
A place where EVERYONE learns! At the same time, the parents are also the students since a major part of the cooperative model is parent education.
Like all cooperative school models, at Mead Co-op the parents run the school, so they are the ones who help establish curriculum, hire, pay and evaluate the teachers. As is true with most co-ops, our tuition is quite low which is made possible because parent involvement is so high. Have more questions or interested in Mead Co-op for you child? This is a fabulous page to follow to discover new books and resources.
If you haven’t heard of Dr. Temple Grandin, she is truly amazing and inspiring! I highly recommend others to read about her. Happy Birthday to Temple!
Today's A Mighty Girl Community Pick is in honor of Dr. Temple Grandin's 76th Birthday: "The Girl Who Thought In Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin" by Julia Finley Mosca. Doctors told Temple Grandin's mother that she'd never speak, let alone have a productive life. But her mother refused to believe it: she saw potential in her observant and creative child. As Temple grew, she learned to articulate how her mind worked: her astounding visual memory allowed her to draw whole blueprints from just one tour through a facility, and her empathy with animals helped her develop methods to improve their treatment at farms around the globe! Today a professor, she has made groundbreaking contributions to science and become a powerful voice for autistic people.
This captivating picture book biography, told in rhyming text, is an inspiring introduction to a pioneering scientist and advocate who persevered against tremendous odds. Mosca captures Grandin's unique way of thinking and how she turned her talents into a successful career, encouraging young readers to see how differences can be a source of strength. Vibrant cartoon illustrations by Daniel Rieley draw kids into Grandin's world. The book also includes a colorful timeline of events and a note from Grandin herself urging children to "keep learning, especially from your mistakes." Highly recommended for ages 5 to 9.

Some of the MANY benefits from being a part of a co-op!! We can’t operate without parent involvement. Which is why we have monthly Parent Education meetings. It’s a chance for the parents to get together and share their ideas and learn about what needs to happen to keep us going. It’s also a chance to share parenting tips and/or struggles. 😉
The other part was to help parents strengthen their abilities to work with all the kids during class and also at home! We were asked to write questions down that we could ask the kids while they’re doing various activities. This can help a parent who is not as confident finding the right words.
At the Mead Co-op everybody learns!😊
Hope everyone had a fantastic Winter Break!
