Familiar Stories 🤍

Kootenai has a new name, Lihimui. 🧡

His family shared the sweetest story behind it:

“Lihimui means traveling plum in Cantonese. It’s also a dried plum candy we loved as children in Hawaii. My niece said he was the color of Lihimui, and when I saw the translation, I picked it. 🧡

Lihi and Mui for short.

Lihi also means ‘small one’ in Hawaiian. 🌺

Our hearts are so full. Truly grateful for you, Julie. You are magnificent. ♥️🐾”

We love hearing the stories that begin after our Habibis leave the nursery. A new name, a family connection, a little piece of childhood carried forward. Somehow, Lihimui feels as though his name was waiting for him all along. 🤍

There is no neutral when it comes to Totoro. 🖤

Today was photo day. Our Morgan was mid-shoot when Totoro needed a moment, and she stopped everything to give it to him.

Because that’s not a distraction here. That’s the work.

Every single person on this team knows it: when a puppy reaches for you, you reach back. The cleaning can wait. The schedule can wait. The baby needs the love and the love comes first. Always.

Nobody who works here answered an ad. Not one. Every person on this team fell in love with one of these dogs first, and then they just never left. Friends. Family. A tribe of absolutely obsessed people who showed up because the dogs brought them here and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

That’s not a hiring strategy. That’s a calling.

Totoro has Precious Moments eyes and a stocky little build and an energy so settled it does something to the room. His whole litter does this to us. They are extraordinary souls and we are completely gone for them.

What you’re looking at isn’t just a puppy photo. It’s what happens when an entire family loves a dog before that dog ever meets you. When the cleaning waits because the baby needs holding. When nobody had to be told, they just knew.

This is what it means to raise a Familiar.

For a long time, getting a puppy from a breeder followed a familiar formula.

Choose a future litter. Put down a large deposit. Get your place in line. Wait.

But there was something about that process that never quite fit what we believe about matching dogs and people.

How could you know your puppy before your puppy even existed?

So we changed it.

Our families begin with preparation inside the Partnership Hub.

That tiny change in language can completely change the way we respond to a dog.

When a puppy is biting, barking, racing around the house, struggling to settle, or apparently forgetting everything they learned yesterday, it’s easy to think:

How do I stop this?

But sometimes the more useful question is:

What is happening for my puppy right now?

Are they overtired? Overstimulated? Frustrated? Confused? Do they need movement? Sleep? Connection? Space? A clearer way to understand what we’re asking?

Understanding doesn’t mean living without boundaries.

It means becoming curious before becoming corrective.

What Is Familiar Watch Actually Watching?

There is a reason we spend so much time simply observing.

A puppy can look adorable in a photograph, but that image can’t tell you how they recover from something unexpected, whether they seek people out, how they explore a new space, or what they do when the excitement settles.

Those little patterns matter.

Familiar Watch gives our Partnership families a closer look at the nursery as those personalities begin to emerge, so the journey becomes about understanding the puppy in front of you, not just choosing the face you noticed first.

A growl can make a human nervous.

Our instinct may be to correct it, stop it, or tell the dog, “No.”

But what if we listened instead?

A growl is communication.

Your dog is telling you that something about this moment doesn’t feel right. They may be uncomfortable, uncertain, overwhelmed, frightened, or simply asking for space.

And usually, the growl wasn’t the first signal.

There may have been a turned head. A change in the eyes. A stiffening of the body. An attempt to move away. A pause that was easy to miss.

The growl came when the quieter language wasn’t heard.

That’s why we don’t think of growling as inherently “bad.” It’s a valuable warning system, and punishing the warning doesn’t necessarily change how the dog feels about what caused it.

The deeper work is learning to notice what came before the growl.

When we become more fluent in those quieter signals, we can respond sooner. We can create an environment where our dogs feel heard and safe enough that they don’t have to keep turning up the volume.

That builds trust.

And it’s one of the reasons we created The Human’s Guide to the Dog Galaxy™.

Meet Bumblebee. 🐝🤍

There are some puppy names that just seem to fit, and somehow Bumblebee feels like one of them.

This sweet little petite girl was born on the Fourth of July, and we couldn’t resist giving her a moment of her own here.

One of my favorite parts of raising puppies is watching them move beyond being simply “the litter” and begin becoming themselves. Their expressions change. Their preferences appear. Their funny little habits emerge. And eventually, you realize you’re no longer looking at one of the puppies.

You’re looking at Bumblebee.

Bluebelle’s babies have arrived. 🤍

For the moment, their entire universe is wonderfully small.

Mama. Warmth. Milk. Sleep. Tiny noises. Tiny paws. And that peaceful rhythm that settles over the nursery when a new litter has safely arrived.

There will be plenty of time to wonder about personalities and watch for all the little things that make each puppy themselves.

But not yet.

Right now, they don’t need to become anything.

They just get to be little.
