We get it — it’s freezing outside and those big fluffy coats are tempting. But when it comes to car seats, bulky jackets and thick coats can actually put kids at risk.

Here’s why 👇
❄️ Puffy coats create extra space in the harness
❄️ In a crash, that padding compresses
❄️ Straps that felt “tight” suddenly aren’t

The safer move:
✔️ Buckle kids in snug without the bulky coat
✔️ Do the “pinch test” — no slack means you’re good
✔️ Then place the coat or a blanket over the harness

Cold kids = uncomfortable
Loose car seats = dangerous

Stay warm, stay safe, and make sure everyone arrives buckled up the right way. 🚓💙

They're not a baby seat, they're a lifesaving belt positioner that prevents internal organ and spinal injury by keeping the seatbelt across the strong bones of their pelvis and shoulder.

Most kids need a booster until 10-12 years old, when they are close to adult size and pass the 5-Step Test for a safe belt fit:

-Shoulder belt lies snugly across the chest and shoulder
-Lap belt is low on the hips, touching the tops of the thighs
-Lower back against the vehicle seat without slouching
-Knees bent comfortably at the edge of the seat
-Feet on the floor (can sit this way the entire ride)

Summer bike rides? Yes, please! Our Health Living program will be at the Bike-About: Bring Your Bike to The Hive event on Friday, July 11 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We will have a limited number of donated bikes and helmets (plus a scooter!) from Safe Kids Spokane to give away, along with public health resources and swag items.

As part of the event, kids will have the opportunity to:

✅ Make a DIY license plate
✅ Ride on a bike course
✅ Enjoy snacks
✅ Learn about bike safety
