In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the AP US History class worked with retired teacher Jodee Cahalan to create Stitching America: A 250-Year Collaborative Quilt. Each student selected a topic from the APUSH curriculum and designed a hand-embroidered quilt block representing an important event, person, movement, or idea from American history.
Students also wrote about their topic, the meaning behind the symbols and colors they chose, and how their quilt block connects to an American ideal such as freedom, equality, democracy, or resilience. The quilt will be a visual reminder of the people, events, and ideals that have shaped the United States over the past 250 years.

The AP U.S. History and AP World History classes experienced a field trip focused on the culture and historical impact of the Spokane Tribe of Indians in our region. Warren Seyler, historian for the Tribe, led discussions at the Battle of Spokane Plains Monument, a fisheries site along the Spokane River, and finally at Spokane House, where the Little Spokane and Spokane Rivers meet.
The trip provided students with a wonderful opportunity to learn about different perspectives on our region’s history and to gain a deeper understanding of the community in which we live.
