Summit 5th grade Trailblazers enjoyed a beautiful day at the Saltese Wetlands completing a series of investigations to answer the questions: Is the Saltese Wetland a Healthy Ecosystem? After completing a series of classroom based lessons, students were ready to put their science skills to work. The kids put on a pair of waders and went out into the water to determine the clarity, temperature and how much dissolved oxygen is in the water. In addition they examined water samples to find various macroinvertebrates which provide clues to the health of the water. Finally, they explored the wetland area with binoculars to see what types of birds call it home. Students found two Great Blue Heron, saw a Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawks, a cute little Chickadee as well as so many other birds. After compiling all the research, the students concluded the Saltese Wetlands are a healthy ecosystem. A big thank you to Spokane County Water Resources, our volunteers and Mrs. Jarvis for making this such a great day!

Here are more photos of Summit's 6th grade Voyagers as they concluded their geology case study on plate tectonics by constructing earthquake-resistant towers in science class. Yesterday marked the final day of testing. For the engineering challenge, students designed and built two-story structures using straws, paper clips, and other small materials, ensuring each floor could support a 250g load.

Summit 6th grade Voyagers wrapped up their geology case study on plate tectonics in science by building earthquake towers. Today was the last day of shaking. The engineering challenge required students to build a two story structure out of straws, paper clips and a few other odds and ends. Each floor had to hold a load bearing weight of 250g.

Three student groups selected a Spokane Chiefs hockey game as their reward for raising funds in our Annual Summit Fund Run, which supports our fieldwork and adventures at Summit. Accompanied by Mr. Jones, our middle school science teacher, they had the exciting opportunity to visit the Chiefs' bench during warmups before enjoying the game.

March 14th means one thing in our Summit 5th grade Trailblazer classrooms- Pi Day! Students spent the day exploring mathematical pi, creating pi art, and reciting the digits of pi. Our big winner was able to recite 148 digits of pi! We, of course, finished off the day eating pie with an e.
