Isothermal Community College

Isothermal Community College Proudly serving Rutherford and Polk counties since 1964. Rooted in our community. Driven by opportunity. Improving life through learning every day.

Founded in 1964, Isothermal Community College serves Rutherford and Polk counties in the beautiful foothills of western North Carolina. Isothermal, so-named because of the region's steady climate, is a comprehensive, two-year public institution and is a part of the North Carolina Community College System. Isothermal's mission is to "improve life through learning." The college offers 87 programs of

study, including college transfer, vocational, and technical programs leading to a two-year associate degree, or one-year or less certificate or diploma. Isothermal also provides training for area business and industry, personal enrichment courses, adult basic education, adult high school programs and developmental courses. The institution is accredited to award associate degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. As of Fall 2012, 2,510 students were enrolled in curriculum courses at Isothermal. Thousands take part in the college’s wide range of continuing education programs each year. The main campus is on approximately 181 acres in Spindale. The Polk campus is in Columbus. The Spindale campus, perched on the shore of an 11-acre lake, is home to The Foundation Center for the Performing Arts, the area's premier venue for the arts and other special events. The campus is also home to Rutherford Early College High School, a collaboration with Rutherford County Schools that allows students to obtain a college degree while attending high school. Isothermal also offers a variety of online courses and has various joint programs with Gardner-Webb University, Appalachian State University, Western Carolina University and several other four-year institutions. In 2009, The Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary. During its first decade, the venue has hosted scores of wonderful performances by acts as varied as the National Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony, Charlie Daniels, Merle Haggard, the North Carolina Dance Theater, Mickey Rooney, the Acting Company, Loretta Lynn and Doc Watson. The Foundation has also hosted national touring shows including "State Fair" and "Gentleman Prefer Blondes." In addition, The Foundation hosts a variety of meeting and banquet functions ranging from weddings and proms to trade shows and corporate retreats. The college also owns and operates WNCW 88.7 FM, an award-winning public radio station that can be heard in parts of five different states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia. The first week of the new academic year is officially underway.

As students, faculty and staff settle into 2026–27, Dr. Margaret Annunziata shares a few words about where we’re headed and what she hopes the year will bring.

“This year, we will continue working together to create opportunities, strengthen our community and help every student move forward with confidence.”

We are very excited to welcome this important and solemn display to campus in November.

THANKFUL THURSDAY | ISOTHERMAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE 🇺🇸

As we continue preparing to bring The Wall That Heals to Rutherford County this November, today we want to recognize and thank Isothermal Community College for opening its campus and serving as the host site for this historic visit.

From the very beginning, Dr. Margaret Annunziata, President of Isothermal Community College, understood the significance of this opportunity. We are grateful that when she spoke with Terry Hines about bringing The Wall That Heals to Rutherford County, her response was that it simply made sense for Isothermal to be its home. That willingness to open the campus to our veterans, their families, our students, and our entire community helped give this journey a place to begin.

We also want to thank Mike Gavin, who has served as our primary point of contact at ICC throughout this past year of planning. We appreciate his continued support and assistance as countless details have been worked through behind the scenes, as well as his help connecting us with the resources of the college, including ICC’s Printing Department, which has helped provide brochures, flyers, and other materials for our community outreach.

Our gratitude also extends to Laura Thomas for the many details she has helped coordinate behind the scenes. Laura was instrumental in helping us prepare for our inaugural Rutherford County Agent Orange Remembrance and Awareness Ceremony held on the ICC soccer fields on August 10, and she is already working with us to plan a special appreciation luncheon for our volunteers following The Wall That Heals.

There are countless moving pieces involved in bringing a national memorial of this magnitude to our community, and having a place to call home is one of the most important.

Thank you, Isothermal Community College, for opening your campus to The Wall That Heals and for helping Rutherford County bring healing home.

We look forward to welcoming our veterans, their families, our students, and our entire community to the ICC campus this November as we remember those we lost, honor those still with us, and educate future generations. 🇺🇸
