Routines # 2
Lunch routines in the Paint Branch Montessori School (est.1975) classrooms focusses on independence, grace and courtesy, and community building, typically lasting 45 minutes to an hour.
Preparation and Setting Up
Table arrangement: Children bring their lunch boxes tit eh table, set down their placemat and napkin and seat themselves.
Independent packing
Food is brought in simple, accessible containers that children can open themselves without adult help.
Eating and Socializing
Grace and courtesy: Meals often begin with a quiet shared moment or a simple verse of gratitude, followed by placing napkins on laps and practicing polite table manners. No elbows on the table
Conversation
Lunch functions as a calm social period where children practice conversational turn-taking, eating their food, and speaking quietly with peers. No talking with food in their mouths.
Cleanup and Transition
Clearing and washing: Students clean up their own area, pack away their lunchboxes and drink bottles.
Restoring the environment
Children wipe down table surfaces, sweep up crumbs with small brooms, and push in their chairs before transitioning to rest time or outdoor play.
