🎨Art in Action at the D.C. Lamphere Studio

A cohort of 8 BHSU students listens in while Professor Desy Schoeneweis discusses their upcoming section of a special topics course! This course is an experimental class taking place at the studio of Dale Lamphere, nationally acclaimed Sculptor and South Dakota Artist Laureate. During their four-week summer term at Lamphere's studio, students will explore botanical and geological pigment production methods with Assistant Professor of Multimedia Journalism (Photography) Allen Morris, then use those pigments and their existing painterly skills with Professor Schoeneweis to create plein air paintings on the grounds of Lamphere's studio space, located just outside of Sturgis. Finally, Bridget Beck, instructor of art, will provide a hands-on week of welding and sculpting to round out the class.

🟡🟢Did you happen to see a bunch of photography students lying outside on the campus green yesterday afternoon with a large sheet? 🐝 Turns out it was students from the Alternative Photographic Printing class!
With the help of Assistant Professor of Photography Allen Morris, students made a class photo using the Cyanotype process on a king-size bed sheet.
The process is UV sensitive, so they had to wait until a gloriously sunny day to tackle the print. Where the sunlight hits the sensitized fabric, it will turn blue (the more light that hits the surface, the darker the blue becomes), and where the light is blocked, it remains a white bed sheet. The students had experimented with the process, but using paper instead of fabric, earlier in the semester, so it was a lot of fun, and it was fantastic to be able to depend on them to help make the print a success! 🌟
