Aaron from Aaron Sahagún Baumgardner visited us to discuss the tools and techniques of bamboo basketry. Aaron Baumgardner teaches rivercane basketry to the Catawba Nation. He brought his splitting tools, rivercane, and samples of his basketry. We shared laughter and discussed curing methods and our fondness for bamboo.

This was a rescue. I blew the rim out of the first iteration transporting 50 lbs of rice. I had taken a shortcut in construction. The new version is way better. I downloaded a new technique from the aether when it came time to fix the rim. It was a blessing in technique. I am already working on the design for the next one that will feature this new rim technique (new to me). Ive seen this technique before on Japanese baskets, but I had no idea how to do it.

Our baskets were featured in a local movie this past Sunday! :) Thank you to Honey By a Thread for including three of our baskets in the mill worker scenes. We are happy to know our baskets will be on "the big screen" this Fall! :)

We enjoyed teaching the students at all about bamboo this past Friday! None of the students had seen the inside of a bamboo cane before our visit. After our demonstration, we gifted students "Lil Boo Bags and encouraged their creativity with crafts made from bamboo.
"Woah. He's strong!"
"Ooooh, it looks like honey!"
This group of children were excited to see the inside of a bamboo cane for the first time 🙂 They were inquisitive and polite and learned a few facts about bamboo during our visit yesterday afternoon.
