𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙂𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚. 😄

𝙁𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙬𝙚𝙝 — the ache to travel somewhere far away. The opposite of homesickness.

𝙊𝙝𝙧𝙬𝙪𝙧𝙢 — literally "ear worm." That song stuck in your head all day.

𝙏𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙠 — "gate-closing panic." That feeling when you think time is running out... for anything. A career, a decision, finding the right summer camp before spots fill up. 😅

𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙣— making something worse by trying to improve it. We all know this one.

This is what I love about German — there is a word for everything, even the feelings you did not know had a name. So that when our students learn these words, they are not just memorizing vocabulary — they are discovering a whole new way to see the world.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭. 🇩🇪

Some kids are starting from zero. Some are coming back after a break, refreshing what they knew and picking up right where they left off. New words, new sentences, that moment when something clicks and you can see it on their face.

I walked through the classrooms on Thursday and saw the same thing in every single one. Kids having fun. Actually busy. Actually learning. And then I looked down the hall and saw adults walking in with the same purpose -- no difference. Everyone showing up because they want to be there.

That is what gets me every year.

We have a few new teachers this year who bring fresh energy, and returning kids who already know the rhythm. Learning a language is a journey, and the people who invest in it will go places -- not just with German, but with how they think and see the world.

Today we start another year of learning German at German School Upstate.

In Germany, the first day of school is traditionally marked with a Schultüte — a big cone filled with little surprises to celebrate the start of something new.

We are excited to get started and ready for a new school year of learning, growing, and discovering German together.

When a child learns German, they are not just memorizing vocabulary. They are learning to think in a completely different structure. Sentences that flip around. Words that stack together like Lego. A logic that is nothing like English.

That is the real gift of early language learning. The words matter, but the thinking matters more — so that when these kids face a hard problem later in life, they have more than one way to approach it.

This is what we do at GSU. More than language lessons, a different way of seeing the world. A life skill that stays with them.

𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠.☀️

This past week, our campers traveled from the Nordsee to Vienna to the Alps — and made a pit stop at home to bring new German words into everyday life. Crafts, songs, games, and a fox named Fritz. So much curiosity in one room.

For many of these kids, it was their very first taste of German. Watching them dive in, try out new words, and light up when a song clicks — that is why we do this. 🦊
